I got two sticks of DDR2-800 1GB RAM (Kingston, CL6, Model name: KVR800D2N6/1G) last afternoon, which, after much testing and pain to my thumbs each time I have to fit them in, confirmed to be not working for my computer. I'm currently posting this with the same computer using the old DDR2-533 RAM stick.
What I need help in is to verify whether this is a compatibility issue, or just that I happened to have gotten myself two faulty sticks of RAM. And I need advice before I head down to the IT show again tomorrow noon, on whether I would have better luck getting my system running with new RAM sticks if I downgrade to DDR2-667 or even DDR2-533 ones.
Even when only one stick is used, the system still doesn't boot up - it doesn't even reach the BIOS. No beep or anything from the motherboard. (The warning beeps are switched off, I guess.) The monitor simply remained in standby mode. The BIOS settings have been resetted to the fail-safe ones as well, but it doesn't help.
The motherboard in use is a GA-965P-DS3 Rev 1.0. I have read the non-exhaustive memory support list for the motherboard on Gigabyte's website and the closest one I can find was KVR800D2N5/1G, which is basically the same model with a CAS Latency of 5 (CL5). I googled an article to confirm with myself that the CL of a RAM module does not affect compatibility, but if anyone here thinks otherwise, please let me know.
By the way, just in case the model of the CPU is a factor, I'll just state it here; it's E2200.
most likely not compatible... go change lo... but wats ur old RAM specs?
Are you using your old DDR2-533 with your new DDR2-800?

Nope. Currently I'm on one stick of DDR2-533. During one of the earlier tests I did, I slotted in just one DDR2-800 RAM stick and it still doesn't boot up as mentioned above.

DDR2-533 CL4 lo. Kingston as well.
The information on Gigabyte's website say it's compatible with DDR2-800 RAM sticks leh. Hmm...I wonder if there are other factors that may affect this compatibility.

Doesn't seem like your RAM is supported by the mobo.

Double post.
There is a new BIOS to fix memory compatibility issues, not sure if it will help.
But fair warning has to be given, if you didn't update the BIOS properly, could end up with a non-functioning motherboard.
Then you have to go over to Gigabyte service centre somewhere in Commonwealth area to get them to do a one to one exchange.

The BIOS update didn't say anything about RAM compatibility?

F5 said memory compatibility issues.
Please stay off the beta BIOS.
Oh... that...
Let's see what version of BIOS he has before going on...
think he go orh orh liao.
Thanks for the link. I tried @BIOS, and beside the BIOS Sign On Message label, it says "Intel P965 BIOS for 965P-DS3 F12", so I suppose the BIOS is updated to the latest non-beta version already.

No la, the night is still young.
If BIOS already updated, then memory modules still cannot work, then maybe you motherboard cannot support lor.
Change to the one recommended in the memory list.
Ok lo, I'll ask them if they have the CL5 ones and if they allow upgrades, then I'll just pay more to top-up lo.
I'm just worried that they don't allow exchanges after purchase because there were a few lines on the T&C printed on the invoice such as "no exchange during the (IT) show under any circumstances" and "compatibility issues are not covered under warranty", but my sis, who is working in the sales line, advised me that if that happens, just make yourself heard by their visitors around the booth and they will duly comply with you.

Missed your post just now, sorry. Yup, I noticed and mentioned that in the starting post. The difference is in their CAS latencies, but that doesn't affect compatibility as far as I know.
how?
managed to get it exchanged?
I didn't go to the show today; I was too late for it actually. I went over to my friend's house to do a hard disk formatting and re-installation of Windows for him instead, along with a port forward so that he can host DotA games. Anyway, I'll be going to their store at SLS this week, and will keep you guys updated on this.
hope you get it resolved one way or another
The RAM modules are working now, after I went over to Best Bargain's store at SLS to exchange both sticks this evening. And they look different, from what I noticed, even though the working ones are of the same model as of the faulty ones.
Thanks M13 and Anty. Case closed. =)
Perhaps the old ones had manufacturing defects or damaged due to static electricity.
Glad you got your RAM problem resolved.
yep probably due to static.
Look different but of the same model???
Glad you get it solved.

Yup, the sticks look different. Some of the differences I can remember are the positions of the memory chips and the size of the long rectangular label. But oh well, it doesn't matter much now anyway.
