if u wan use utp then sure will hv to drag the wire around...
no need ask shops... jz ask ur frens who free to help u do so.. or ask if any forumers stayign near ur place can help u configure...
Getting a wireless router will do. A warning though, connecting a modem and router together and getting it to connect to the Net will give you headaches. I'll suggest that you get a router, with modem integrated. Configuring that (router cum modem) is easier.
First,i assume that your connection is:
CyberWorld -> Singnet Modem -> PC
think of the router as a satellite "broadcasting" the internet around the house
If your laptop is placed a distance away from the PC and modem,i suggest you go wireless.
Depending on your wireless card, there may be some percentage of speed loss.Only Intel Centrino technology(according to my testing) has little and minor loss.
CyberWorld -> Singnet Modem -> Router -> PC
You must connect the router between the modem and the PC.
Ethernet cable from modem to PC originaly now to router first then PC.
My example of router used in this case is Linksys WRT54G,there's 4 ethernet slot for you to connect ethernet cable up to 4 PC.
The CD that come with the router should configure everything in one go.
Finally, dont forget to secure your wireless signal to prevent mooching, that is - people using your network for free to surf internet.
PS:Im not sure if there will be complication in this guide due to ADSL technology since im using Starhub Maxonlin, which connect via Cable.
Singnet connections can be complicated to set up. You won't believe the amount of routers I've tried to get it up and working. Even Singnet is tired of me. Talking about that, their tech support technicians suck. Haha
Thankfully, the shopkeepers in Sim Lim are nice.
okies. thx all for the explanations and help. appreciate it lots!
erm, lastly one more qn... will all the routers available in the market out dere fit my com? cuz my desktop is rather old and i'm afraid maybe some router might not support the specs or wad.

Lol...guess Starhub has the upper hand for router and modem "cooperation"

Since you are able to use Singnet provided ADSL modem, then you will have no problems with routers of any kinds, except cable routers. Cable routers are for cable users.

UTP=unshielded twisted pair
to go more into that would be rather technical...U just need to know that basically...It is a LAN ethernet cable that U need...there are 2 kinds...straight and cross...U need the straight one.
U go buy a wireless router...less than 100 bucks can get already...then U follow the instructions and get ur router working with ur PC(I presume with the ethernet cable plugged in)...then U go back to the router configuration and do the wireless part...set it up with WEP/WPA/whatever encryption and put the key into ur laptop(I again presume ur laptop is set with wireless antenna working).
Its the wireless part that most people have problems with and it would be nice to have someone with experience to help U on-site...ie friends.

you can bring without wireless, provided you have a long UTP cable. pricing of wireless router varies, i'm not sure of the exact range. if you want faster transmission, then you'll have to pay more. normal routers are much cheaper though. its just like electricity. if you don't plug in to the appliance, how to get power? UTP is normally the term used for network cables, just like telephone cables but they have bigger heads at the ends because of more transmission wires.
I dont think UTP is the term used for network cables...UTP is the type of wiring/shielding method used in the cable...which is called ethernet cable(or LAN cable).
The technical name for the bigger head is RJ-45 connector.
just for the fun of it...for those interested...the technical name for the telephone head is RJ-11 connector.
RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors look very alike, except for the difference in their sizes. RJ-45 cables are slightly bigger.
any best recommended brands for the router? cheap and efficient i mean. lols.
dlink
If it's just routers, Edimax, DLink, Aztech.
