Hi my 1st post here..LOL
I need help on my gaming local network connection as my buddy & I decide to have a gaming network within ourselves but the main problem is either my buddy cannot connect to my server or I cannot connect to him. Suspect is the ip address thing btw my buddy staying few floors below me. I check the both of our ip address & it is the same, he using singnet & I using maxonline.
Anyway to solve it?
The game we are playing is Battlefield 2, yeah I know is a old game but it still rocks.
why it is local network if you are using different routers and service providers?
Originally posted by abao:... ... oi, dont look at your interal IP address when joining a network. either use speedtest.net to find your IP or access your router to get your real IP address.
To help you, the following are internal IP address ranges (means these are not the ones you are looking for):
10.x.x.x range
192.168.x.x range
Hey thanks, Yup I use the speedtest.net to find out my ip address & it's confirm not the 192.168.x.x but why does my buddy can't connect to my server? I have other buddies living at other areas at sg & have no problem connecting to my server. Only this particular fellow which stay belows me can't get connect.

Hi eagle, the local network is within the game itself. Example from the bf2 create local network than I pass my ip to my buddy & they will join local network which connect to my ip. Hope I answer your question.

It has nothing to do with the physical location. You need to check with him whether there is a firewall on his computer or router blocking outbound connections. I'm not sure whether port forwarding on the router, if he is using one, is required for outbound connections though. Kenn3th may be able to answer that question for me.
Next, what are you all using to connect with each other? Hamachi? Lancraft? YAWLE?

My friend is not using any router at all so mainly maybe is firewall BUT if it is due to firewall he still able to connect to other gaming server except mine? Kinda weird right..
Hmmm...We are not using any of those what you have mention to connect with each other. The bf2 itself can host the server & let others to connect through.
Quite likely to be due to firewall. To test, either you or your buddy turn off the firewall, then try connection. If the connection is successful, you will have 2 solutions
1) Turn off the firewall whenever you play
2) Configure the firewall to allow access by your software (or port or whatever)

Ok will try soon & let you know.
It could also be your anti virus suite causing this problem. This is especially the case if you are using internet security suites.

In simpler terms, the router is the device that connects to the internet and it holds the public IP address. The computer behind the router, on the other hand, is invisible to the Internet as it holds a local IP address. Port forwarding is necessary in the router because computers will send information directed to the public IP address and the router needs to know where to send that information.
Not using router, but using modem? Can he get in to the modem page (usually 192.168.1.1) and see the settings?

I need some advise on how to disable my anti-virus suite, currently using Mcafee security suite but when I right-click on the task bar Mcafee logo there is no disable option or exit option. Is there any way to disable it?

Now I think is my side got problem cos one of my buddy can't connect to me so I guess is either the router giving me problem or the anti-virus suite.
Any idea how to disable my router? When I unplug the ethernet cable from the router & plug it into my PC and it show no connection or limited connection... I need a direct connection from modem to pc. Thanks...
Plug in your modem.
Open Command Prompt (Start > Run and type in cmd and press Enter)
Type in ipconfig /all and press Enter
Enter the Default Gateway IP address into your browser
Then check if you can allow your games through the modem.
If that can be done, plug back your router and repeat all the steps.

Hmmmm..just to clarify with you so do you mean plug the ethernet cable to the pc & do the steps you mention?
Yes.
It access me into the router set-up page so should I enable everything under the port range forwarding? Pardon me for being a noob..What is DMZ? Should I enable it? Thanks a lot
A router is like a guy who handle the letters for a spy agency, where each spy (computer) can have many aliases. So, if he receives a letter for Mr. 45678 but he does not know who he is, he simply dumps it away. Setting up a port forward is like telling the guy, say, Mr. 45678 is actually Mr ComputerA. So any letter sent to Mr. 45678 will be passed to Mr ComputerA. Then setting up DMZ for a computer would be similar to telling the guy that when he receives a letter which he doesn't know belongs to who, instead of dumping it, pass it to a specified spy instead.
Anyway, if you're lazy to figure out port forwarding, or there is only one computer using the internet connection, you can go ahead with DMZ. But I would recommend hiring a secretary (firewall) for the spy with DMZ to filter out the letters he receive in case someone tries to send one with anthrax powder (malicious data).
The above is not a really good analogy though, but I hope you can vaguely get a basic idea of what a router does in a network from it.
