  It depends. If an invention brings money, of course patents help. And it helps if you are greedy. Of course, if you are doing it for interest and with a sincere heart, patents or no patents wouldn't matter. But rather, you wouldn't want to be restricted in any shape or form either, especially if it's based on some patents.
