Laptop's dvd drive cannot be detected

  Hi can someone pls help me.
  
  My laptop's dvd drive cannot be detected and when i go to device manager, it is also no longer there. I am using windows vista.

  If can't detect, high chance it's a registry issue or gone case.
  
  But I'm not familiar with Vista registry. I'm not going to attempt to fix it.

  is your dvd drive an external drive? if it is, some laptop has certain "modes" to save on its bettery usage, if yours is an external dvd drive, try looking for your laptop battery usage application is see if firewire/usb detection has being switched off?

  try to install the driver back..

  err ... you see if u can eject the DVD Rom
  
  if the DVD Drive tray pops out , Check BIOS of laptop to see if it detected the DVD Rom
  
  If its detected , change boot setting and insert a bootable cd ( like vista or XP or ur recovery CD ) then u insert the CD n restart the comp
  
  It should boot into the recovery / XP / vista dvd
  
  Try to hear the noise by the drive , if it does not boot in to the dvd , check if your laptop has a booting key n then boot to the dvd rom , if it doesnt read still , then ur DVD rom is spoilt
  
  Send your laptop back to acer , or whatever brand is your laptop and ask them to change the DVD Drive
  
  After Changing and the DVD Rom still doesn't show in windows , your windows may have some restrictions or so that prevent you from using ur DVD Rom

  Not difficult to fix. Old problem that started from XP.
  
  1. Go to your registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11­CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  
  2. In the right panel you’ll see “UpperFilters” and “LowerFilters”
  
  3. Click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
  
  4. Restart Windows.
  
  5. You'll see your drive again! (unless it really is some motherboard problem)
