Hard disk file problem

  Hi, I have a Microsoft Word document that I can't delete.
  
  When I attempt to delete it, it states:
  
  The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
  
  Please advise on a suitable solution to the problem.

  XP and Vista
  
  1. Open My Computer
  
  2. Right click on the drive in which the file is saved at
  
  3. Select Tools tab
  
  4. Under Error Checking, click on Check Now...
  
  5. Untick all the boxes and click OK
  
  6. You will be prompted that Windows can't check now and will need a restart. Click OK. Restart your computer. On restart, you will encounter a blue screen that Windows is checking the disk for error.
  
  Note down all the errors while it's scanning.

  It's an external hard disk drive by the way....

  External can do the same... though I not sure if need restart.
