need good free antivirus

  can anyone suggest a free AV program, that is light on resources and is a good defender from viruses?
  
  also is a software firewall a necessity, if you visit sites that are known to contain malware and those sorts?

  Even the world's most sophiscated Trojan in 2006 uses Kaspersky to get rid of its competitors. How powerful do you think Kaspersky is if a malware developer himself is using it to get rid of its malware counterparts?

  Good and free - AntiVir. But I would recommend it for advanced users as it uses heuristics.
  
  For in between, try AVG or avast!.
  
  As for sites that contain exploits or malware... firewall can't help you.
  
  My advice - use Firefox with NoScript.
  
  Or if you insist on using IE or other browsers, get IE-SPYAD or a HOSTS file to protect you. IE-SPYAD is for IE only, HOSTS file will re-direct all bad sites to a non-routable IP address so if you accidentally enter one, the website won't work at all.

  AVG from Grisoft. Best free antivirus around. Works remarkablely well.
