problems booting

  hey guys can help me find out why when i boot my desktop, it manages to get to the main screen but no icons appear.
  
  is there a way to rectify this problem thanks

  can u see the taskbar? the on with the 'Start' button
  if cannot, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc (opens Task Manager) ---> 'File' ---> 'New Task (Run...)' ---> type "explorer.exe" inside without the quotes ---> 'Ok'

  try stopping explorer.exe
  
  The start menu disappears
  
  So I guess what wishboy is suggesting is the reverse of it...

  Did you read everything before posting?
  
  If there's no Start menu, wishboy suggested another method.
  
  Get explorer.exe up and running first.
