buying gaming desktop

  hi i plan to buy a gaming desktop for quite sometime le..current desktop cmi and i dont wan to use my laptop for gaming.
  
  if i go to SLS and build myself(actually ask a fren to set up everything for me), wad parts and components shld i go for?
  
  budget within 1.8k...nsf lah very budget one
  
  is it possible to get a C2D+nVidia 7600+4 GB RAM with this budget leaving $$ for the other stuffs?
  
  actually i can up my budget to 2k.

  Hmm 1.8k should be enough. Recently, I also built my desktop at Sim Lim. The specifications are: Quad core, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard disk, ATI 3850. It costs about 1.6k.

  I already have monitor and speaker so you may have to spend more to get them. I played C&C and the effects are good. I went to Bell Systems on the 5th floor.

  1.8k can build very good one le ar.
  
  300 for 17 inch lcd monitor nowadays.
  
  500gb hard disk also cheap like below 200.
  
  ram not so sure bout prices, but if u want gaming go for 2gb.
  
  graphics card get one of the latest, abit ex but worth it.
  
  my altec lansing speakers+subwoofer cost me 200, but those 100+ more then enough..
  
  sonic gear sound system not bad also, but the logitec 5.1 series i think 139 was it, seems like quite a good bargain.

  i'm not very sure about the latest graphics cards and their model names as i don't really check much about these kinda stuff unless i needa buy them.

  4GB RAM could burn your $$$.
  
  2GB RAM ain't exactly cheap. And I doubt anyone would want to buy 4 sticks of RAM to up it to 4GB.
  
  I noticed that some motherboards are very short of RAM slots. Some only have 2 slots, not much room for upgrade. And to think it's an ATX board...
  
  I would think to stick with 2GB for now, and if possible, buy one a motherboard that supports dual channel. That would make better use of the RAM and could save some money.

  i spent about 1.3k on my comp recently and i can already play all the current games at max settings. with 1.8k you can build a really powerful comp

  Vista is not worth its money When u can get fantastic functionality for free in linux distros, I don't understand why we must pay 100s of dollars for a crappy Vista..
  
  Besides 4gb is an overkill, just get 2gb ddr2 667mhz in1gb sticks. Then u can use dual channel (better check if mobo supports it). C2D is more then enough for any game right now. I have E6300 (1.86Ghz oced to 2Ghz) and I can play every game in the market now. Including FEAR, Bioshock and Crysis. My gfx card is XFX 7900GT DDR3 256MB factory oced.

  I think with $1.8k you can get a much better graphics card, like the nVidia GeForce 8600GT or the aTi Radeon X3850

  Hello, nobody is going to start a Vista course here. Stick to XP. And not many applications are still Vista compatible because Vista is a near complete overhaul of XP.
  
  It's not possible to write softwares for Vista without ever crashing it because it's so different.
  
  2GB of RAM will suck the life out of Vista, not inclusive of games. He might as well buy 4GB of RAM if he uses Vista.
