i'd prefer a 13inch notebook compared to a UMPC......
Many 13 inch notebooks now lasts upto 13 hours of battery life
but in terms of porformance i'd prefer a 15.4 inch notebook which has hd screen and powerful processors what not.... -
what's the specifics of a better processor. im a tech noob. pardon me

the smaller it is, you may think easier to carry, harder to use harder to see..

if its homeusage, i rather get a big big LCD monitor and an upmarket CPU, no to notebooks -
if you want for hardcore gaming you need a 2.2 ghz dual core processor at the least.....with an ati or geforece 8+++ with around 256mbram for the video and 2gigram for pc....the battery normally for these kinda specs can last from 2-2.5hours onlyOriginally posted by twinkleprops:what's the specifics of a better processor. im a tech noob. pardon me
these kinda specs you can only get from at least a 15.4 inch notebook
if you wan just for leisure and work
1.2ghz dual core processor and 1gig ram enough.....normally these kinda spces the battery can last from 7 to 12 hours....its more portable with around 2kilos and only 13-11 inches
also to add....the 13 inch notebook can have less hard disk space also......for 15 inch and above you can get more than 200gigs.....
for 13 should be 160 and/or even more less.....but you could always use an external drive.......
if you like to shake your laptop like a c0cktail shaker there is always an option of flash memory instead of harddisk drives.....but bear in mind that flash memory for now is only upto 48gigs...the only advantage is you dun need to worry about spoiling your hard disk -

i dont need a high end one. just something that isnt too pricey, lightweight, portable, small ( not small till i have to winch my eyes). just using it for lightweight stuff like surfing the net, presentations but need a big big memory space to store my pics, songs etc
any recommendations? -

dont mind second hand if anyone has any for sale. but must be reliable la -

you'll need from 1.6k-2k to get a portable notebook....try going around courts...over there got alot for you to see -
UMPC may not be suitable for you. A 12/13" ultra portable notebook maybe more suitable. But the price will be steeper.
For cheaper ones, you can look at NEC or MSI.
If you are still interested in the 7/8" UMPC, you can look at the Kohjinsha brand. its should be around your budget. Forget about Asus eeePC. the currently available model has only 4GB flash storage space and half already used by the OS. -
UMPC cant go fast...buy userelf a 12" notebook....UMPC more for educational purposes...and ultramobile businessmen...

1.7kg..extremely tough...dropped it...poured water on the keyboard before...the works...worth all the 3k i spent on it -

ok...so UMPC is out.
for 13 inch ones...any reco for something with a better processor. internal memory dont have to be fantastic cause im going to get an external harddrive.
it'll be great if the batt life is good. but those with long batt life are usually heavy -

Both Rockhound and Deino are right.
UMPC is not suitable for you.
I for a while was very interested with the Asus eeePC until I checked it out at Sitex.
At almost $600, the functions are just marginal. The only UMPC with comparable performance to a notebook I can find is from Sony but the price is about $4000.
My suggestion will be to invest in a good notebook with at least 3 years full warranty. And save the hassle of having it breaking down often and sending for servicing.
I won't recommend you any particular brand or models. Just for your info, I currently own an Asus Gaming notebook at home and a 3 year+ HP business notebook at work. Bothare 14" and above full notebook, so not in the ultra-portable notebook class.
