Cd Rom Problem.

  It doesn't read any cds.
  
  And it hangs my comp when i double click on the cd rom drive under my computer.
  
  However under device manager, the hardware is said to be working perfectly fine.
  
  Help much required, Thanks for your time.

  argh the thing just hung again..
  
  ok i can access it normally when there is no cd inside, as in enter the cd rom drive.
  
  but it doesn't read a cd, and when u try to access the cd rom drive with a cd inside, the hourglass figure doesn't go away forever.
  
  and now the my computer says not responding..

  Guess your drive is dead. Tried other discs already?

  yes, all the other disc alao same problem..

  ok, when the thing hangs i am still able to surf net etc.
  
  but i cna't retsrat the com, and i lose all my desktop icons plus start menu program..
  
  and have to manually press the reset button.

  You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and see if it helps, or try plugging the drive onto another computer. If it doesn't get any better, you know it's time to junk it and get a new one.

  It's either a CD or drive issue.
  
  If you are sure that your CDs are working, your CD drive has died.
  
  Drivers can be working, but Windows don't report faulty devices. It only applies to faulty drivers, because they need the drivers to work.
  
  Another way to test, get your Windows CD. Set the BIOS to boot up from CD. If it could boot up to the CD... something else is wrong then. A dead CD drive most likely won't boot up from the CD drive and will skip directly to the next device - a hard disk or whatever that is set.
