psp hangs whenever umd is inserted. how?

  what might be the problem?
  everytime i turn it on with the umd in it, it turns on but hangs after showing the psp sign.
  when i remove the umd, it continues operating as per normal.
  it can do everything else except play the game cause it keeps hanging.
  how man?
