USB Driver Issues

  My friend's com was hit by Kavo.exe and it took him hours to pluck that parasite off. Now, the issue of removable drives being undetected remains and Google can't seem to find me the perfect answer.
  
  Here's some info:
  - uninstalling the drivers and re-installing them doesn't seem to work
  - tested with 3 storage devices, all unable to be recognized
  - other USB devices on other ports working fine
  - USB controller listed under Other Devices
  - copied NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from CD/i386 folder to C:\
  - *updated* system is on Windows XP (no SP)
  - copied Disk.sys and Partmgr.sys from my drivers folder (I'm on XP SP2) to his

  So, is there any method available that can fix this?

  The evil solution...
  
  Uninstall the USB controller drivers and SM Bus controller drivers.
  
  Restart computer. Windows should start installing some drivers. Then check Device Manager again to see if the USB and SMB bus controller drivers are working fine.
  
  If they are, plug in the removable drive.
  
  Doesn't work... find the motherboard drivers... download it.
  
  Uninstall the USB and SM Bus controller drivers, restart computer.
  
  Windows will install them again... cancel the installation or just let it move on. Install the motherboard drivers and restart computer.

  Tried the first method yesterday, but it didn't worked.
  
  The second one, I was hesistant about whether the drivers will work for Win XP since they only work for Win 2000, ME etc. For Win XP, the site tells us to get it from the XP SP1 disc, which I'm not sure whether my friend has it.

  If it works for Windows 2000... it will work for XP.

  Eh, I found this. Does the download contain the drivers? Or is it just a patch to existing ones on a system?

  Never mind, this one didn't work - his system did not have any service pack applied.

  Tried the Reinstall Driver option?
  
  Since all other ports work fine... this one can be ignored... although it sticks out like an eyesore.
  
  Also try Windows Updates under the Hardware section.
  
  I have no idea why his system isn't patched, but if it is ahem version, he should be able to get hardware updates.
