Hi all,
The icons on my friend's desktop turned to an icon in "FILE" format, such that when you double-click you have to "open with...".
All he is able to do is to open IE and MSN messenger. IE lags a lot too and he is unable to visit websites either.
He tried reformatting, but after that lost the internet connection.
What can be done? -

I also have a problem with my com. Does anyone have any idea why does my com suddenly take so long (3-4 mins) to start up when it normally takes about (1.5 mins) only after reformatting it.
Another problem i have is sometimes my com can suddenly just shut off and re-start by itself. Then sometimes it can't even start and a message said some system file is missing or corrupt then i have to re-fprmat the whole com again and again.
Is there something spoil in my computer? the memory, the cpu? I am using a Hp Pavilion, 2.5Ghz, 2x256 (512mb) running on Windows home edition.

1. What programs do you install after reformatting?
2. During the re-installation of Windows, did Windows prompt about any files not being able to copy over? -

U doing any downloading from p2p sites? -

Either he's using a wireless LAN card or he's using a USB adapter. Can ask him to check? -

Should be. If he doesn't, it probably means he didn't do it the right way.Originally posted by kenn3th:After reformatting did he get back his normal interface?
By the way, the registry corrupted, that's why it caused the above symptoms. Either he reset everything manually (trust me, you will cry, there are thousands of extensions in Windows) or the best way is just to reformat.
There's also a registry fix for fixing the extensions problem, but it's only a few lines. Can't really tell if it's useful. -

And during the re-installation, everything goes as per normal cos i am using a HP recovery CD...

My C drive total is 143GB free space 126GB. D drive 69 GB free 54 GB. E: which is also part of the main HD, (C) keeps the recovery part. Total size 5GB. C & E are from 1 harddisk (160 GB). D & F is another from my 80 GB harddisk.
