are u sure only winxp allowed? coz some of my frens frm ngeeann poly have vista installed. and there shouldn't be any diff be it vista or xp rite? e-learning programs software and curriculum all done online rite? any special software that only be done on xp?Originally posted by furb:The differences between getting n poly and outside is:
Getting in poly is cheaper, getting from outside you can customise the specification.
About software and stuffs, the school will provide you whether you buy your laptop from sch or outside.
If buy from sch, the software is already in it. If buy from outside, you have to waste a bit of your time for the sch to install the softwares in your laptop.
If window vista, the sch will re-install the whole laptop to win xp. That is how much poly hate vista.
Total installation time can be up to 6 hrs, be prepared.
If you are on budget, doesn't mind the specs, you can get it through the school.Originally posted by elspeth:SP in particular...
would it be better to get a laptop thru the poly's special packages or any laptop externally outside ones which i can find in sls or funan or any other com store? as those outside have better performance and are more customizable...
what i'm afraid is that those bought internally via the poly's cheap lappie packages have already some pre-set configs inside the laptop and some pre-installed software which i really need.
For now, most schools won't allow Vista to be pre-installed, due to software incompatibilities and being unable to set certain policies on the laptop to follow the school rules.Originally posted by elspeth:are u sure only winxp allowed? coz some of my frens frm ngeeann poly have vista installed. and there shouldn't be any diff be it vista or xp rite? e-learning programs software and curriculum all done online rite? any special software that only be done on xp?
as for the softwares that has to be included in the installation together with os, if say i already have the xp, vista original os + ms office xp/2003/2007, i can always install by myself rite?
and if i were to get my poly to install for me, will it be done before admissions/orientation time? so that it won't affect when i've already started classes.
thanks for the heads up and advice... but "frenly" ver of xp sp 2 os also can't use? how bout ms office? i'm free to install that on my own rite? be it original oem or a "frenly" ver one? and if i choose not to update? dont think sch can do anything about it rite...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:For now, most schools won't allow Vista to be pre-installed, due to software incompatibilities and being unable to set certain policies on the laptop to follow the school rules.
If you get the wrong version of Vista, it can't even connect to the school, so it's going to cause even more headaches to the user as well as the school.
You can still use Vista though. They won't restrict you. There are huge differences between Vista and XP although they are both based on the NT family versions of OS.
If you already have your own softwares, you need not install those provided by your school. No one would force you not to install through the school if you want to pay for those softwares yourself. And I warn you, no cracked softwares in school. If you can't update for some reason, have your computer hacked due to the inability to keep your system up to date, you carry the risk of bringing down the whole school network.
RP students should be very familiar... because some idiot has done that and managed to infect the whole school network.
All the configurations are done before school opens or when you buy the laptop on that day so you don't have to configure it when your school opens. Unless you opt to or have no choice as poly intake figures are going higher each year.
no what i'm meant was if get from outside dun have pre-installed software and the sch's configs...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:If you are on budget, doesn't mind the specs, you can get it through the school.
While I understand you are afraid of pre-set configurations, what I don't get is why are you afraid of the pre-installed softwares which comes at no cost?
ur sch can install for you free wad. as long as ur laptop is urs.Originally posted by elspeth:no what i'm meant was if get from outside dun have pre-installed software and the sch's configs...
Originally posted by furb:as in bold above... the reinstallation is free or mst pay

No friendly versions of anything for school. If you want friendly versions, get another one and use it for home. The school doesn't need extra security and network problems and wasting their tech support staff time to troubleshoot something that doesn't work.Originally posted by elspeth:thanks for the heads up and advice... but "frenly" ver of xp sp 2 os also can't use? how bout ms office? i'm free to install that on my own rite? be it original oem or a "frenly" ver one? and if i choose not to update? dont think sch can do anything about it rite...

Some schools do force update, it's not something you want or don't want.
