HDD problem!

Few days ago my ext hdd was unstable. Always connecting, disconnecting itself from my comp, finally I reinstalled the driver, and it became more stable and I could finally transfer files from my last shoot. But it's still connecting and disconnecting itself frequently.
Then I defrag-ed and error checked my drive. Midway thru error checking, my comp stopped responding, and I switched off my drive's power (ARGH!!!).
Stupid action... now my drive can't be read!!! Can't be opened, accessed or anything. Even the name in My Computer was reverted back to "Local Disk" rather than the given name.
Someone suggested I use Partition Magic and TestDisk. TestDisk worked, I can finally access my disk, but there are no files inside. The used volume is still the same. Used partition magic chkdisk. Msges say what recovering orphaned file (name) to (number). What happened?!!! -

Do you have another PC? Try connecting to another one and see what happens next. If it's working, check the hard disk for errors, don't fix any yet.

Shutdown the computer, then turn it on in about 5 minutes. After that, try with another port. -

Maybe you can try a program called HDD Regenerator.

During error checking maybe there was wriing to the disk, then suddenly shut off, could be the cause of the failure. Just like flash drive if the computer is accessing it and you plug it out can potentially cause it to fail completely

Normally, for disconnecting. it's because of the usb cables. sometimes if u accidently hit them, it might cause the hdd to dc.

Static rarely happens to USB as they are protected.
Since you said you powered off while the HDD is still running... high chance that it's gone case. -

ya. Power off while hdd is still running has a high chance to corrupt your hdd, but i wonder why mine always power off like that then nth happen

All my Maxtor HDD more than 10 years old haven't die yet.
