BenQ might go out of the budget. Acer, Lenovo (without IBM logo on the laptop) or Dell is your best bet.
And for competitive prices, take a walk around Sim Lim to decide. -

Acer users if lucky, can last longer than their warranty. If unlucky, doesn't last.
Most will find some problems here and there with Acer after their warranty ends.
As for Dell, there seems to be lesser problems these days, or should I say I see so little Dell that it's barely a problem.
Lenovo... I don't know. I don't trust China on many things. -

Or can look at Packard Bell or NEC. NEC is harder to find, I have no idea if they are ever sold in SG. I last saw them in PC Show. -

If they ever say oh you want change your processor to higher cap 1s? and upgrade your graphic card for another xxx$ if they ever say of upgrade. They trying to carrot you aready
1st: They sell you another laptop same specs as they discribe to you
and the same model(All laptops look about the same) espcially Compaq
so they earn more in the end but you kena carrot.
2nd:They open up your laptop and add in the parts or swap things to make
you contended with the laptop specs.however you didnt know you kena carrot
**The above two example are true in many shops i have been,the 1st is a better choice because you are able to get what you want with a cost but there is still warranty.
But for the 2nd example,i dont know what are the aftermath if you bought it.**

One thing about sales people - some are not so technically aware, especially those big MNCs like Harvey Norman.
Here's a small little test I did at Harvey Norman.
Me: *see specs*. Laptop is good. What is the OS ar?
Salesman: Vista Home Premium.
Me: Got Vista Business or Vista Ultimate?
Salesman: Vista Business is for business. No Ultimate.
Me: Vista Business is not for business.
Salesman: It's for business.
Me: Haizz... OK. Don't want buy liao.
For the curious, Business Enterprise is for businesses. That's the version that has to be bought from MS and validated against MS servers.
Those in Sim Lim will know better... but there are some who will try to cheat you.
One nearly had his trick work, but too bad, he got the wrong user.
Salesman: Miss, this spec is good. Duo Core 2GHz, Vista Business, lightweight, 2GB of RAM.
Me: No no, this one Duo Core only, I want Core 2 Duo.
Salesman: Wah, you know.
Me: -_- ............
First thing to check is always their brochures. Some always recommend, but don't know the specs well and will try anything to get you to buy. -
