Me going on my birthday with my friends.
I am going to buy a 22inch screen leh.. what day do you think i shld go? oh btw i am buying cos i am using a bluray suported comp.
Oh and btw also, i just bought my comp thanks to every one in this forum and esp LatecomerX
There are major changes to Bluray. I highly recommend everyone to wait before buying an Bluray hardware.
Current Bluray products will not be compatible with newer Bluray products due to these major changes. The only exception is Sony PSP.
Hmm... going on either of the 4 days to look see first before buying... hehe

6 March 2008 to 9 March 2008 <<<< just nice is today sia
will be goin today or tomorrow.. my first IT show trip
i intend to get an external hard disk, digital camera, MP3, thumbdrive and printer ink cartridge.
Uhmm.. please help a non-tech savvy person
For external HDD (for Desktop),
1) Can anyone recommend me a particular brand which is better? is there a thing like that
2) I learnt something bout the 2.5 and 3.5 thing. (i decide to settle for 3.5)
So regardless of 2.5 or 3.5, I just have to plug it into my USB port thats all, right? no additional plugs or whatever to use it?
Is there any other things to look out for?
Thanks
Anybody know if there's any good deal for a wireless router and a notebook adapter during the PC show?
So far, I've always seen Linksys and Netgear selling wireless routers there. Linksys is not under my recommended list, unless you wanna try the latest Wireless N technologies. I'm very satisfied with Linksys Wireless N products.
If you are not looking for latest technologies, I suggest you head for Netgear products.
Also have seen people buying other brands as well, like Aztech and Buffalo. Not sure if they have a booth though. If you can't find a booth, most likely it's at one those Sim Lim shops at the IT Show.
And what sort of notebook adapter? Charging? Wireless?
As for Lorry...
Seagate and Hitachi external hard disks are both well known. Samsung is popular. There's also Ranger...
And what's your definition of better? Warranty? Speed? Lifespan?
If you are not concerned about mobility, 3.5" external hard disks are fine. They also tend to have larger capacity and are faster than 2.5" ones.
3.5" external hard disks often need an extra adapter, USB alone is not enough to power it.
Things to look out for...
1. Space (If it's for backup purposes, make sure you have plenty)
2. Size (a consideration for those on the move)
3. Warranty (some are comfortable with long warranties)
4. Lifespan (surely you want something to last long)
Anyway,i think there's no point getting Wireless N router unless u're on Starhub Ultimate 100mbps,since the speed itself will be the bottleneck
Mine's pacific internet 6000kbps, on cable modem.
Mine's Pacific Internet 6000kbps on cable modem. Looking at setting up a wireless LAN at home. Therefore I will need a wireless router and a notebook adapter for my notebook.
Personally, I use 3Com.
Tried these and find that they are good:
1. Netgear
2. Edimax
3. Planex
4. Buffalo
5. Aztech
Eh, those buying laptops, Toshiba offering free MS Office 2007. Student and Teacher edition. This means 3 licenses. Just for today according to the salesperson. Lappy cost about $1799.
For the record, this Toshiba lappy is not very warm despite the long hours it has been running.
Other lappies no real goodies. Sigh.

no.
3.5 inch hdd needs a power source.
2.5 inch hdd only requires a usb port.

Thanks alot Mayi
Size is not a problem, i will just backup my stuffs on my desktop and place the hdd at home.
Hmm.. my definition of 'better' will be Lifespan and Speed. Lifespan is more impt. Hoping to find one that runs on USB 2.0 because im not sure of the adaptor thing
- 3.5"
- Lifespan (Reliable)
- Runs on USB
I've read that some users their external HDD died just few months later, i dont want that to happen, so i am wonderin if i should get the maximum space (500GB) but that will mean i will pay more of course. It's ok for that, what i mean is i dont want to get something like 500GB but then later it died after few months of usage.... what a waste.
Im actually considering:
- WD Elements Desktop 500GB
http://westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=333
- WD Passport 160GB (the metallic red) passport looks better imo
http://westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=367&language=en
erm.. btw, whats the diff between Desktop and Portable category in that site?
Aren't both still external storage?
Under Desktop: Elements Desktop - it says External Hard Drives
Under Portable: Elements Portable - it says Portable Hard Drives
Desktop category = 3.5"
and
Portable category = 2.5" is it?
confused!
Thanks

hmm.. i see.. Actually i think running on a usb port will be more convenient, not sure of the extra power source, such as an adaptor tho. I want to be as less complicated as possible, like the way u insert a thumbdrive. hahaha!
Thanks

Just wondering what's the difference between the Wireless N and Wireless G notebook adapter. Is the price difference worth the product?
Any comments on the wireless G broadband router? Does this fit my cable modem?
WD 1TB for $299...

Both are external storage devices. However, the difference between Western Digital Elements Desktop and Passport Portable is the size.
Elements Desktop is significant larger than Passport Portable. It also requires an AC adapter (meaning it needs another electrical power source).
You could say that the Elements Desktop belongs to the 3.5" external HDD category and Passport Portable belongs to the 2.5" external HDD category, although their sizes aren't that.
What's makes 3.5" different from 2.5" is the need for additional power source.
Western Digital is well known, and their products are pretty good, so no worries.

I have a phobia for Western Digital hard disk, I always encounter problems with their hard drives.

Wireless N is relatively new and is still in drafting stage. No guarantee if there will be major changes, just like how Bluray changes (which by the way is so major that old Bluray products will not be compatible with new Bluray products).
As for price difference, quite frankly, not all will agree with it. Speed wise, it's a great improvement, but only if you are not on the Internet. This means if you are sharing files within your home network (say transferring files from your laptop to your PC), the increase in speed will help. Internet bandwidth, on the hand is determined by the ISP. Having such a great speed is thus wasted.
Range wise, it has also been improved. Wireless signals will no longer be as weak if you are too far from the router (but that doesn't mean you can go too far away from the router). You no longer need extra range booster to boost the range.
But as technology improves... it will seem like buying now is not worth it... just like when wireless first came out... it was darn expensive. Now? Not so.
Some will say these improvements will be worth the price, some will say not...
I don't recommend Linksys at all, especially the Wireless G routers. With each newer firmware upgrade, more and more problems are introduced. I suggest you go for others.
By the way, need you to clarify something. Since you say you are using cable modem, I assume that you are a Starhub user? If so, yes, the product that you are looking at is compatible with Starhub cable modems.

Never encounter problems with them for me... just that their WD configuration is very different from others (if you ever need to configure one). You can guarantee to get a headache from them...
