TOKYO: Some 550
Japanese took to the streets in Tokyo on Saturday, to protest against
Japanese broadcaster Fuji TV's decision, to cast Korean actress Kim Tae
Hee as the female lead in its upcoming drama series "99 Days with the
Star", reported Japanese media.
The protesters marched for over an hour, waving placards and shouting slogans.
They
labeled her as being "anti-Japanese", pointing out that she had
campaigned in Switzerland six years ago to support Korea's claim over
Takeshima (called Dokdo by Koreans) - a group of islets with rich
fishing grounds and suspected reserves of natural gas - which is also
claimed by Japan.
Protesters expressed disappointment that Fuji
TV would allow the actress, who openly went against Japan's territorial
claim, to appear on Japanese television.
A similar protest march was held last week to protest against Kim's involvement in the drama.
Kim
had responded to accusations of being anti-Japanese in earlier
interviews with Japanese media, saying that she is "very interested in
Japanese culture" and had visited Japan "often enough to say that I am
familiar with the country".
However, she has so far kept silent about the latest protest march targeting her.
In
spite of the protests, "99 Days with the Star", which also stars
Japanese actor Nishijima Hidetoshi, is expected to air as scheduled on
October 23 in Japan.
