DC Comics Unveils Batwoman As Their First Openly Gay Superhero

DC Comics is replacing Batman's heroic reign in Gotham City with a red-haired lesbian. Batwoman is set to make her comeback as the comic book's first openly gay superhero.
The flame-haired crime fighter is described as "lesbian socialite by night and a crime fighter by later in the night." She will take over the job of taking care of Gotham's safety from Batman, whose apparent death has paved way for her entrance.
Writer Greg Rucka told Comic Book Resources, "We've been waiting to unlock her - it's long overdue."
"Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue. That's certainly not mine."
Batwoman - whose alter-ego is Kathy Kane - was introduced in1956 as a love interest for Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne, to disprove allegations of homosexuality in response to the 1954 book "Seduction of the Innocent." She was first outed by her creators in 2006, making her a former lover of Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya.
She will appear in at least 12 issues of Detective Comics from June.
