WELLINGTON, New Zealand - One the 20th century's greatest adventurers is dead.
New Zealand's prime minister says Sir Edmund Hillary, who conquered Mount Everest, has died. Hillary was 88.
In addition to climbing Everest, he was also the first man to drive a tractor across Antarctica.
Hillary will also be remembered for his philanthropy. The New Zealander devoted much of his life to helping the mountain people of Nepal.
Hillary was also known for his humilty. He prefered to be called "Ed" and considered himself just an ordinary beekeeper.
