what to do if your gums are weakening/loosening ?
i not sure whether my gums are weakening or loosening or whatever
my bottom front teeth...in the past, there wasnt a hole inbetween them (instead, gum was in between my bottom front teeth). recently, it seems that the gum has been eaten away and now there is a hole in between my bottom front teeth. and the hole is getting bigger.
whats my problem here ? is it possible not to go to a dentist ? what will happen if i dont seek treatment ?
what will be the procedures to restore the gum ? roughly how much $ will it take ?
thanks

Hi noob321,
I believe that you are suffering from gum recession. If it is not serious, a dentist will be able to help you by scaling and polishing your teeth, and arranging regular checkups with you. But if it is serious, you may have to go for tissue grafting ( Periodontal Plastic Surgery ).
If you are still studying, you can seek help from your school dental for a referral letter if surgery is deemed necessary.
Cheers.
thanks TrueHeart.
sadly, i am a poly student already...:(
Perio problems can't be solve by the regular scaling and polishing, you have to do what we call Root Planning under local anaesthesia and this usually require a few visits which the dentist will also advise you to use chlorhexidine mouthwash as well. If perio problems are left untreated over a period of time it will lead to advanced periodontitis which can lead to loosening of the tooth and tooth lost eventually. Do seek treatment early. Root Planning is more costly as Dentist normally charge per quadrant.
However if you have any extractions done before the teeth can shift as well over a period of time which will result in an unsightly gap.
Normally Gum grafting doesn't work alone. In most cases if there is gum recession it goes hand in hand with bone lost as well. So we are looking at Gum and Bone grafting.
i done no extractions before
thanks mythoslogos
so, i just have to seek treatment early right ?
No problem. And yes, for dentistry it is always best to seek treatment early. Nothing can be more costly than to replace missing teeth. And dentures are not what you would like. In the mean time keep brushing and flossing to delay the problem from progressing. You can use mouthwash that contains Chlorhexidine(not alcohol). But these type of mouthwash cannot be use for a long period of time as it will stain the teeth. If unsure you can ask the Pharmacist on how to use the mouthwash.
so therefore i can slow down the problem by keep on brushing and flossing ?
thanks
btw...the gums should be red in colour right ? mine is kinda pinkish...and i found 7 weakness points...
Gum should be light pinkish, red is inflamed gum. But brushing and flossing alone does not treat your perio problem, it might only help to slow down the progress a bit, it does not solve the problem. Do see a dentist asap.
Sorry, what do you mean by 7 weakness point? Do you mean blood when brushing?
You can't make receded gums grow again.
yes there is blood...
and these 7 points, 1 point already receded to form a hole in between my two teeth
other 6 points got the potential to form holes
wow sounds like u brush v hard...
just slightly bleeding only...not much blood
TS I heard the dentist said something like, your nerve ending at your gums is affected, meaning it is decaying.
When I heard the dentist told me this, I knew I am in deep deep shit cos I have not visited a dentist for many many years, plus I only brush my teeth once a day. he told me I am in danger of losing my teeth at the back end. He told me if I dun want to lose the teeth, I need to see a specialist. whats the term for it eh? is it root canal? by the way whats root canal? he told me it will costs me like $2000 to retain the teeth.
Root Canal.
Ouch!!!

What is root canal?
Root Canal Treatment means removing the pulp/nerve in the tooth (under local anaesthesia). After RCT is done the tooth is considered "dead" and if it's a molar it's better to get it crown to prevent fracture due to heavy biting. RCT is done when the tooth is deem not fit for the regular filling anymore, usually the decay has reached the nerve in the tooth and most patients will experience moderate to severe pain before they decide to visit the Dentist.
I believe the price includes RCT+Crown. Is it a molar(back tooth)? RCT takes 1-3 visits and around 2 more for crowning.

Continue brushing even if there is blood just be gentle on the gum. If you don't brush more tartar/calculus will form.
