What determines teeth alignment?

  What determines the alignment of teeth? Like some people may have bucked teeth, or some have overcrowding.
  
  Is it genetic, or does it have something to do with the way you brushed before your permanent teeth grew out or ......?
  
  Come to think of it, it's really gross when I think of teeth sprouting out from "nowhere" inside your gums. YUCK!

  my pri sch dentist once forced me to use her method brushing my teeth, which is the traditionally correct way of brushing..
  
  guess my teeth don't give me headaches now... except their colours.

  Everyone has the same maximum number of teeth...maybe some people's jaws too small and teeth too big?

  Some people have more teeth than usual, and some people have fewer teeth.
  
  These are cases of hyperdontia and hypodontia respectively. However, these are extremely rare occurences.
  
  Most of the time, these extra teeth do not grow out from the gums hence the possibility of further dental problems or even causing the delay of other nearby teeth. Such extra teeth are most commonly found near the incisors.
  
  And ermm, they're more common in Asians.

  I've yet to find a detailed explanation for the way our teeth develops vis a vis the alignment. But I came across a short and simple one in a magazine.
  
  

  The milk/primary teeth hold the right spaces for the secondary/permanent teeth. If a child loses a baby tooth prematurely, nearby teeth may tip or move into that empty space, causing crookedness.

  Hence, it is extremely important to take care of one's baby teeth, even though one day they will eventually fall out!
  
  Phew. I had to read so much just to stumble upon a small part that tells me why my teeth are like that.

  Funny, my baby teeth don't fall off themselves, always have to plucked off by a dentist. That's why I hate a dentist so much. Give me nothing but nightmares.

  I read this off the web, so I'm not sure how accurate it is... but according to the website...
  
  The reason why baby teeth fall off by themselves is because as your permanent teeth starts to erupt, it causes the root of your baby teeth to dissolve until only the visible part (the crown) is left, and stuck to your gums with only gum tissue.
  
  There are cases where baby teeth require extraction, and that is when the eruption path of your permanent teeth misses the baby teeth, so dissolution of the baby teeth roots doesn't occur.
