the cranial nerves for smell is CN1 while that for taste in the anterior tongue is CN7 (sensation of the tongue is by CN5 and the motor is by CN12). The taste and the smell meets together in the brain stem and gets transmitted together in the representation area of the cortex. If there is a block in the nose, CN1 gets taken off as the olfactory nerve endings juts out from the ethmoid plate (cribiform fossa) which is from the roof of the nasal cavity. -
