SINGAPORE: Shoppers can expect self checkout counters at more NTUC FairPrice supermarkets this year. It's part of the supermarket's efforts to boost productivity and raise service levels with the use of technology.
At FairPrice Finest in the new Clementi Mall, shoppers can scan, pack, and pay for their purchases, all on their own.
There are also "self
weighing" machines for fruit and vegetables, and electronic shelf
labels - which FairPrice said will save at least 50 man hours that staff
spend per month manually printing and updating prices.
For FairPrice, the new technology optimises manpower so that staff can better focus on serving customers.
"The
customers who have come to this store, (and) tried the system are
telling us they're more than ready to see more of such self checkouts
and to use such self checkouts. Which is why by end of this financial
year not only will you see this in this store, we're going to have up to
eight stores which will have these self checkouts," said Mr Seah Kian
Peng, CEO of NTUC FairPrice.

Isn't paying at the cashier serving your customers?
What other types of service are they expected to provide?
Don't tell me they want to reduce manpower (read - reduce jobs) by automating everything?
And please don't tell me grocery prices will go up because of this automation.
YOU the labouer, WE make more money
I've ever seen e ops at Clementi before
scanning of barcode is a skill

You couldn't have said it better.
Cheapskate , want save customer service money by having no manpower serve customers. wu zip , bo chooot.
Obviously they just want to save money and profit more by doing this
that means they'll employ less people!!!
if we do self-checkout do we get a 2% rebate or discount at least?

Isn't that the objective of every profit driven company? Cut cost while maximising profits? It only makes sense to reduce staff numbers, while maintaining product cost.
Would you wanna work in a company that doesn't make money?
Increase productivity equals do more work with lesser staff
Oh noooo....many cashiers will be laid off if they implement this islandwide....

even if profit increases it doesnt translate to a payrise for all staff.
the ceo will take credit and get another fat bonus.

NTUC - profit driven company?
NOooOoooo.
NTUC for a long time is already a non profit organisation. Defeat the purpose when it was initially set up. What can we expect when we have a bunch of money hungry super world class greedy govt !!!!??
some people have noted on stomp, NTUC wanting to keep costs low for consumers, no doubt sells fruits that are of lower quality

NTUC tries to cater to all.
They have NTUC Finest which sells up market european foodstuff.
ok
They roll out from Clementi 'çause they cornered the market with 3 stores over there.
How they did not.......another story.....
But safe place to try out the system.
Any other place, if they make people do the self-checking out and all the other trouble, people will go to another supermarket brand.
Wow finally.
I featured this automated self-checking out counter in 1 of my projects before... :)
