SINGAPORE: NTUC FairPrice said it is expanding its chain of hypermarkets to increase accessibility for customers, with the launch of its fourth outlet at Nex mall in Serangoon on Tuesday.
FairPrice said it expects to have six hypermarkets in Singapore by 2013 to provide greater convenience to its customers.
The supermarket chain is looking to launch its fifth outlet in the eastern part of Singapore within a year.
It said it aims to provide at least one hypermarket in the North, South, East and West heartland areas of Singapore.
Ng Ser Miang, the chairman of FairPrice said the expansion will not have a negative impact on smaller proprietors.
"We
always believe in co-existing with them. And the example of Ang Mo Kio
Hub, we bring in a lot of traffic so the small provision shops also
benefit from it. And because of the size and the different range of
products that we carry, so we serve different segments as well."
Addressing inflation concerns, he said that hypermarkets help to keep food items affordable.
"The
hyperformat format has helped to contribute to the economies of scale
that we are able to negotiate for better prices. We have been concerned
with the inflation since last year, so we are able to stockpile more
rice for example, so we are able to hold the price of rice till August.
And for the 500 essential items, we have promised to hold prices and
even give discounts until May," said Mr Ng.
The new outlet at Nex
is the second FairPrice hypermarket to offer 24-hour shopping
convenience. In total, there are 30 FairPrice outlets that operates 24
hours. It also features the largest live seafood selection among all
other outlets.

I dont quite believe it. Smaller proprietors will be facing difficulties when completing with the ntuc.
Bad for proprietors, good for customers (more choices).
I agree here, of course the expansion of a large chain is going to hurt smaller businesses, you don't have to be a scientist to see that I think:)
no ma
ok... Provision shops some end up small shop got better range than NTUC...
bigger ones say Sheng Siong
in tis line, it's e provision shop & Sheng Siong doing better in terms of variety

Wow. Garment - We bring in a lot more FTs so the local populace also benefit from it.
Neat.
Also, wet markets will be hit too.
Young couples would love to go ntuc to buy fishes and meats, chickens, etc...where price tags is being tagged and also under air con. Wet markets will die fast...
Again good and bad for wet markets stall holders.
Good : They cannot anyhow raise the price of their goods.
Bad: Stall holders cannot chop the customers anyhow in future. Onces get chop, no more customers, they will go to ntuc.
it's just like e housebrand..
no matter wat, in some items NTUC can forget abt fighting de..
just like oil, pls lor.. like Lam Soon they've their own plantation, so they've bigger price flexibility over price adjustment..
NTUC gotta get them to pack their housebrand oil for them...

both factors la.. e young dun want to do e stalls also..
but seriously, market though a little more expensive to buy fruits, veg, meat or fish cos of EOS, they're better in freshness.
of course if you want aussie pork, gotta to go to supermarket.
market also is e place to buy curry spices and coconut powder
I still prefer econ supermart. The price is somehow abit lower in certain items. But due to space limitation, they are not able to compete with ntuc.
sometimes things cannot use EOS or no of stores islandwide to compare de.
It's a range of diff specifications tat makes up how good tis so and so supermarket is.

Actually the reason is in the morning when we are rushing to work, they are open.
End of the day when we come home, they're closed.
Weekends... seriously who in the right mind after working shit hours during the week want to wake up early to go to the market
How come they dont have their own household brand?
eg) ntuc 42 inch lcd tv?? Some electricial name after ntuc? Should make it affordable for sporean.

like in tis sort of case, you dun have e EOS
Just like Phillips, they do it for everyone worldwide. Think of our successful industrialisation in 1970s of being world factory for lots of barang barang. The only varience is the power input electrical parts.

Also I think in terms of freshness if you go to Giant or Sheng Siong, I don't think they lose to the wet markets seriously for fish & seafood

Wet market prices are not really cheaper than supermarket nowadays.
In fact, Sheng Shiong's prices are really very competitive when it comes to wet market.
Sheng Siong!!
Support e local SME industries!
Young ppl like to go NTUC?
If I hv a choice, I will go to Cold Storage or Sheng Siong
Just that the closest supermarket to my place without having to take public transport is NTUC
Cold Storage is expensive, if not for convenience, I buy from Sheng Siong....
