SINGAPORE: Some 20 seniors will be offered jobs in NTUC FairPrice's latest initiative to promote active ageing.
The supermarket chain announced on Tuesday the launch of the project at City Square Mall.
NTUC FairPrice CEO
Seah Kian Peng said: "We want them to stay active through employment and
through this way, it serves a few purposes.
"Firstly, you are
able to keep your time meaningfully used. Secondly, we believe mature
workers bring with them a lot of stability, and a lot of experiences".
The
pilot project will see senior citizens above 60 years old serving as
customer relations officers at various FairPrice outlets.
They will assist with customer enquiries and gather feedback as part of their duties.
Singapore's first Olympic medallist is also lending his weight to the active aging cause.
Seventy-seven-year-old Tan Howe Liang was named as FairPrice's Ambassador for Active Ageing.
He kick-started his new role by leading 50 senior citizens from South East CDC and FairPrice, in a mass workout.
One of the workout participants, 66-year-old old Sabita Devi, said she was inspired by Mr Tan to be more active.

Good to hear that to offer senior a job.
After elections, they are back to hiring PRCs again....

So far, near my home, the ntuc hire prc for cashiers jobs. Will see whether it is true they hire senior citizens or not.
Why NTUC never took the initiative to hire more seniors during the last few recessions?
Instead, there were more foreigners hired during those periods!
Why NTUC only wake up to its role of social responsibility and only wake up suddenly and
swiftly with 360 deg turn after the botak and his gang announced steep hike in foreign
worker levy and cut back in import of foreigners?
Why NTUC? Why?

Pun intended.
aren't there better ways of staying active and involved as a senior citizen? like engaging in hobbies and social activities?
why do menial work for low wages when you should be enjoying life?
has anyone addressed this issue?

Please lar.
Why would senior citizens want to do sissy stuff like playing with their grandkids or watching Ai every afternoon at the kopitiam, sipping a nice cup of teh si?
Real senior citizens bust their arse everyday clearing plates at foodcourts or packing heavy foodstuff at the nearby grocery store.

Wow. Singapore's senior citizens are so much more hardworking than those lazy sods from other countries.

One of the last big employers to hire PRCs... but then think again...
It is operated by the biggest local union in Singapore.
Instead of looking at union issues and fighting for workers' rights, they are hiring PRCs instead of locals.

We need to be cheaper, better and faster than everybody else.
Don't care if you are 80 years old.

Follow the MM's way. Most likely Singaporeans will work till 90+ and counting
my home downstairs de Shop & Waste hire china, filipino and malaysia cashier. Even store crews are from these few countries. i cant see any difference btw them and locals except the salary could be lower. but people from other countries got the rights to work in any country they like, and vice versa.
At least they dare to venture out of their country. We?
they advertise wen they hired 20 seniors, they kept mum wen they hired 200 foreigners

If the pay overseas is competitive + living conditions will be good + Singaporeans will be able to pay for housing if they decide to return....
I doubt there is any concern for Singaporeans. I do have some friends working overseas, but they are only working overseas because these companies are paying high senior executive pays such that the pay check justifies it.
Do you see local company hiring big group of Caucasians working in a restaurant? Do you see local company hiring big group of Koreans sweeping floor, throwing rubbish? Do you see local company hiring big group of Japanese to collect dishes in food court?
Are the pays overseas competitive enough to lure Singaporean over? Similarly, the same applies to Caucasians, Koreans, Japanese when they think about venturing to Singapore to work.

Because they must put themselves forward in the case study of the pension system and understand how come pension system is not working for the rest.
They exhibit grit and courage to withstand such an injustice done to themselves.

There seem to be a link.
After the announcement of levy increase, ntuc told the public, hire senior workers. If that is true, then ntuc is very cunning.
