  AVA recalls Wyeth milk formula( ST dated 20 Feb 09)..but a check with NTUC,and other provision shops still selling the products...recall is becos milk contains lutein,a type of food colouring,although is a permitted food coloring but its use as a nutrient in infant formula,follow-up formula and growing up milk has not been officially establisned. Luetin are yellow carotenoid pigments found in plants,animal fat and egg yolk;it is used as an anti-oxidant and for blue light absorption. The AVA sent a circular on Feb 13 asking importers and distributors to recall Wyeth's range of infant and follow up formula containing lutein with immediate effect for destruction or re -export to the country where the product was imported...yet these shops are still selling as at today

View printer-friendly version Wyeth Nutrition Initiates Voluntary Recall of Selected Store Brand Infant Formula From U.S. Marketplace - Precautionary measure affects nationally distributed store brands - RADNOR, Pa., Nov 1, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Wyeth Nutrition, in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is initiating a voluntary recall of all batches of store brand powdered milk and soy-based infant formula produced between July 12 and September 25, 2002 at the Company's Georgia, Vermont manufacturing facility. Low levels of Enterobacter sakazakii (E. sakazakii), a bacterium that is common in the environment, were detected in tests of retained samples manufactured at the facility during this period. The nationally distributed powdered infant formula brands being recalled have an expiration date (use by) between 07 28 2005 and 09 28 2005 embossed on the bottom of the can. The brands being recalled include: Baby Basics, CVS, Home Best, Healthy Baby, Kozy Kids, Hill Country Fare or HEB, Little Ones, Parent's Choice, Safeway Select and Walgreen's. Consumers who have cans of infant formula with the expiration date between 07 28 2005 and 09 28 2005 can return the product to the place of purchase. Consumers can also call 1-888-526-5376 for information about this recall. There have been no reports of illness associated with E. sakazakii infection as a result of ingestion of Wyeth infant formula. However, in recent years there have been reports in scientific literature identifying very rare cases of infections associated with this bacterium. Most reported cases have been in immunocompromised and/or premature infants. Although the incidence of illness from E. sakazakii is very low, it can result in a serious condition, especially for high risk infants. In April 2002, the FDA wrote to health care providers advising them that high risk infants should always be fed with liquid formula, which is commercially sterile. All of the powdered infant formula affected by Wyeth's recall is marketed for healthy, full-term infants. Wyeth's liquid formula products are not affected.   i called up AVA earlier. current stock in shops doesn't contain lutein. only the parallel imports has it.

  Thanks ixie mini for the info..are U using this brand too? I hve switched over to Similiac.Previously prior to Wyeth-S26,I'm using Enfrat(for infant)....strongly recommended by some doctors(no sugar content)

  Managed to call AVA today. According to them if we are having Wyeth products at home (e.g. Promise Gold, etc..), do a check in its ingredients for Lutein. If this is listed/exists, return the product back to the Retailer (e.g. NTUC, Giant, etc..).

  787180: My girl used to drink S26 and Promil when she was younger. Switched to enfagrow last year. But what prompted you to switch to similac for your baby? Ironically, I was just mentioning this recall thing to my cousin in JB over the weekend whose child is drinking wyeth milk. She told me all the wyeth milk selling there already contains lutein and the sales team were heavily promoting it.
