Jobless Claims Fall to Four-Year Low"The small drop in claims this morning provided some reassurance to equity market investors that we are likely to repeat rather than retreat from last month's outsized employment gain," said Anthony Chan of J.P. Morgan. Chan added the claims data appears to have calmed the market's nerves after a negative durable goods report.

Unemployed Workers Receiving Jobless Benefits Falls to Four-Year Low
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of people receiving unemployment benefits reached a four-year low last week, fresh evidence of a strengthening economy.
The number of laid-off workers receiving jobless benefits averaged 2.58 million over the four weeks ending last week, the lowest four-week average since March 2001, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
For just last week, the number of newly laid off workers applying for benefits fell by a better-than-expected 4,000 from the previous week to 315,000, the lowest level for new claims since the first week in August.
Analysts said both the drop in total benefits being paid and the decline in new benefit applications pointed to an economy that was continuing to create jobs.
Singapore's July manufacturing output up 5.9% from a year agoJuly's industrial output was below expectations - but overall, the trend of steady recovery remains intact. Economists had expected July output to be about 9 per cent higher year on year, and as high as 13 per cent, which would have been the fastest pace for the year to date.

SINGAPORE : Singapore's manufacturing output grew by 5.9 percent in July from a year earlier, said the Economic Development Board.
The slower-than-expected pace was due to weaker biomedical activity from June's blistering pace while the electronics sector remained muted.
Output from the volatile biomedical sector rose 14.5 percent in July from a year earlier after surging 40.9 percent in June.
The growth slowdown came in pharmaceutical output, which rose 15.5 percent in July, slowing from an expansion of 48.8 percent in June.
Excluding the biomedical sector, industrial production in July rose 4.4 percent from July 2004.
The electronics sector, which is a third of industrial output, grew 2 percent on-year in July, down from 2.5 percent growth in June.
The EDB said, seasonally adjusted, industrial output fell 2.3 percent from the previous month, compared with June's revised 9.4 percent expansion.
For the first seven months of 2005, total manufacturing output grew by 5.0 percent compared to the same period in 2004. - CNA /ch

Economy Grows at Solid 3.3 Percent Pace in Second Quarter, Slightly Less Than Initial Estimates
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The economy grew at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter, slightly less than initially estimated but still a solid performance, especially given galloping energy prices.
The new reading for the gross domestic product (GDP) for the April-to-June, quarter released by the Commerce Department on Wednesday, showed a tad less robust growth than the 3.4 percent pace first estimated for the quarter by the government a month ago.
