LRT: why and how?

  The "LTA's Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) (Part 2)" topic (page 77) has been going off-topic recently. To make that topic relevant again and to allow for the off-topic discussion to develop, I shall create this new topic.

  Through this topic, I hope we can seek a concensus on the purpose of LRT and discuss possible areas to develop LRT.

  Personally, this is my view on LRT:

  • There will be new LRT lines in future.
  • These lines should run along roads which can no longer be expanded (otherwise will be as wide as expressway) or serve areas where the roads are already serving at maximum capacity.
  • One good example is Clementi.
  • Instead of being feeders to MRT, the LRT stations should serve as alternative points to board the MRT.
  • To make it effective, the stations should be spaced at least around 800 meters apart (400m is too close).
  • To save costs (so can build more of such lines), the new LRT lines should be elevated.
  • To prevent another under-supply problem that is present in BPLRT, SKLRT and PGLRT, as well as to over-supply for the future (to save future costs),  such lines should consist of 2-MRT cars instead of 2-LRT cars. 
  • With 2-MRT cars, there should be over-supply and the trains would not be packed until a very very.... very very..... very very very.... very long time later (eg. when Singapore's population hits 15 million).
