Fabricated STOMP report: SPH says sorry to SMRT again
SINGAPORE - The Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) apologised again last Friday to transport operator SMRT over a fabricated report of one of its trains moving off with its doors open.
This happened after SMRT interim CEO Tan Ek Kia had asked SPH to "make good the damage done to public confidence in the safety systems on Singapore's rail network", in a response to the initial apology by SPH English and Malay Newspapers Division Editor-in-Chief Patrick Daniel last Sunday.
Mr Tan also detailed the "considerable resources" that SMRT spent in testing the trains and holding some back from operation. "We deployed additional engineers to check the fleet and the system for abnormalities or noise ... We also pulled back trains in order to conduct extensive checks on train doors," he said.
Mr Tan's comments were reported on Saturday by SPH newspapers The Straits Times and The New Paper. According to The Straits Times, SMRT will not be taking legal action against SPH. The articles did not detail how many man hours were spent or the financial cost of the extensive checks that had to be conducted by SMRT because of the fabricated report.
The episode began last Wednesday after a Straits Times Online Mobile Print (STOMP) content producer, Ms Samantha Francis, 23, posted a picture of the train, using the moniker "Wasabi". She claimed to have taken the picture at the Lakeside Station the day before.
But checks by SMRT - its teams reviewed closed-circuit television camera footage and checked fare card records with TransitLink - showed that Ms Francis had never been at the station that day. After investigations by SPH, Ms Francis confessed that she had taken the picture off Twitter. The picture, according to The Straits Times, was taken from the outside of a stationary, out-of-service train.
Ms Francis has since been sacked.
Mr Tan also said that STOMP Editor Azhar Kasman had claimed that "Wasabi" was unwilling to share her contact details and ez-link card details when SMRT staff requested for them. Mr Azhar only shared the details after SMRT informed him that they had carried out overnight checks on its fleet of trains and were considering asking the police for assistance, Mr Tan said.
In his latest apology to Mr Tan last Friday, Mr Daniel said: "I must apologise to you again for the false STOMP post and also for the great trouble we put SMRT through to check your fleet of trains. My colleagues and I have strived always to uphold high standards of integrity throughout the organisation but we failed in this instance."
Mr Azhar also apologised for a "serious error of judgement on my part". Mr Azhar, 32, said: "I can only say in mitigation that as a relatively new editor, this was the first time I was dealing with a situation like this."
STOMP - which has one editor and six content producers - has also said on its website that its staff will no longer put up posts under nicknames. Such posts will be clearly attributed to "The STOMP team".******************************
Too late, SPH. When you had your own staff masquerading as members of the public, your credibility went down the drain.
Properly crediting the relevant posts to the staff members now will do nothing. You should start by going through all past posts and give a list of which ones were written by SPH staff members.
If you don't want to do that, just shut the site down before someone decides to sue you. Seriously.
