So we were thinking, we will have a centrally automated control system that will allow chairs to be folded during peak hours to create more space for more people to enter the mrt! Priority seats will remain foldable at all times! We think that this idea would help reduce the problem of congestion in mrt trains. We would like your opinion on this!! Thank you :)
no, i dun support!
take a look at the foldable chairs that SMRT has tried on the WAB buses at the wheelchair bay..
but do ppl really use it
anything tat is not fixed is abusable
i think it shd be tt priority seats are NOT foldable.
Woah woah woah...
Later if the chair folded, spoil and cannot unfold how???
Sometimes more needy people than expected. How?
better not otherwise later breakdown like the mrt then charm liao.
We would like to clarify that the chairs will only be folded during peak hours of 6am to 8am and 5pm to 8pm weekdays and weekends. Also the priority seats will remain unfolded throughout.
if 5.55am i enter the train and sit on a foldable seat
then 6am activated. so i will be kiaped in the seat?
and if im standing at the folded seat spot at 7.55am
then 8am the seat unfold, so i (and 3 other ppl squeezed in tt spot) will be knocked over?
naise.
I'm all for it. It's not like we don't have backbones. If people didn't have seats to fight for there would be fewer fights, mad scrambles to get into the train and moronic STOMP posts. But would the cheapskates at SMRT invest in them?
they can. and then raise the fare so tt we pay more to stand.
but then, this idea is flawed anyway.

They'll raise the fare to pay for the "cheaper, betterer and fasterest" solution - removing the seats altogether.
The chairs will not be automtically folded the moment the clock strikes 6am. The chairs will only be folded once the trains reach the end of each train line ( whenever during the peak hours that is) and all the passengers have exited. Before new passengers enter the train to travel in the opposite direction to the other end, train operators will enter each carriage and with a push of a button, allow all the chairs ( except priority seats) to be folded.

What if the button fail. Will the train operator cause the massive delay at the end of each train line?
What if the mechanism catch to fold the chair fail and release thus, causing damage to passengers? Will SMRT pay for 1st class hospital ward with specialists?
Does the foldable seats comes with drop down handles for people to stand with handles? Will the drop down handles be unable to close and thus become a hazard for the head?
Does the foldable seat automatically unfold in the crowded train for people who require priority seat and when all priority seats are occupied by people who require them? Will the unfolding of such a seat become a problem?
What if the priority seat cannot unfold after peak hours? Will SMRT provide sofas?
What if commuters refuse to get up at the end station at 5.59 for the station operator to unfold the chairs? Will they get whistled?
Machine operators in SMRT can conduct frequent checks ( e.g twice a week) after the train lines have closed on the mechanism of the foldable chairs to ensure they work properly through out the week. With regards to safety, the chairs themselves may be used as "handle bars" to hold on to and the walls of the MRT can be used for support. However, we do agree with Nelstar on the safety issue to a large extent in which case we suggest adding removable handlebars that may be installed and removed during and after peak hours respectively.
ya ya. many ppl who are boarding the 2nd last stn like to take to the end so tt they can get a seat to continue the journey the other direction
wow. peak hour still let u slowly fold and unfold and install and remove handles?
the point is to make sure the trains come fast, rite?
Might as well make MRT double-decked.
Can put more ppl what.
guard rails can tahan or not?
need double the amount of cable tie leh
You haven't answered the question of what happens if there are more needy people than reserved seats available?
Your solution is not workable. There may be on average 10 needy people per carriage, you may have 15 seats but very often there will be more and less.
to make the journey more entertaining, instead of the train is coming jingle, can blast "Stand Up For Singapore"
@ Fireice: we are suggesting that the trains be folded up during the maintanence checks that are already happening on trains now. The maintanence check timings are to be shifted to the early peak hours so that the folding of seats happens simultaneously with the checks. Therefore, the speed of the trains will not be affected as much and will remain at the speed they are arriving at stations now
The entertainment idea is very interesting. Thank you for the idea. We suggest installing televevisions that play music and short advertisements as a form of entertainment. We may also play local music from local artists ( they will sponsor us to provide funding to cover some costs of installing the chairs also !)
@ Alize: We have actually conducted observations on trains and realised that during peak hours there are actually very few need people on the trains (e.g elderly). They are definitely less than ten in the mornings. Plus we will always have 8 seats per carriage folded down for the needy during the peak hours :)
