MORE Singaporeans are taking the MRT to work compared to a decade ago, according to latest figures from the Singapore Department of Statistics.
The Census found that 31 per cent of people used the MRT to go to work, up 24 per cent from 2000. In contrast, the number of bus commuters fell to 19 per cent from 25 per cent over the same period.
Also on the increase, but only slightly, is the number of people who drive to work. Up 1 per cent to 25 per cent in 2010.
The highest proportion of people commuting by MRT live in Sembawang, with 49 per cent saying they took the train. This was followed by Yishun, Woodlands and Choa Chu Kang.
Similarly, the proportion of those taking the bus to work was highest in Bukit Merah at 31 per cent, followed by Marine Parade and Bukit Panjang.
For those who drive, they come mostly from Tanglin, Bukit Timah, Mandai and Newton.

its kind of logical that we have more people taking public transport, when our population rise from 4m in 2000 to 5m in 2010.
As for the following,
The highest proportion of people commuting by MRT live in Sembawang, with 49 per cent saying they took the train. This was followed by Yishun, Woodlands and Choa Chu Kang.
These districts happens to have a larger portion of lower-middle class families, as evident by housing price. Bus routes are reasonable, but travelling takes up too much time as compared to mrt. e.g. 171 takes close to 2hr to travel from yishun to orchard, whereas mrt only takes 20mins.
Therefore, mrt is a more logical transport in these estates.
Similarly, the proportion of those taking the bus to work was highest in Bukit Merah at 31 per cent, followed by Marine Parade and Bukit Panjang.
For bukit panjang and marine parade, they take bus because they don't have any mrt in their estate. for bukit merah, the redhill mrt station is built quite some distance away from its bus interchange. may be more troublesome to travel to the mrt station when there might be a direct bus.
For those who drive, they come mostly from Tanglin, Bukit Timah, Mandai and Newton.
These are the more pricey areas, and residents often live in private properties, and thus are more likely to own cars. And for mandai, its also quite ulu, and thus driving might be a more practical form of transport than buses.
Will the fare going to increase this year?
Most likely.

bo leh.. when i take the trains, lots of foreigners on the trains...
The worst part is even it is jam packed, the air con is not really strong. That is the frustrating part.
"MORE Singaporeans are taking the MRT to work compared to a decade ago.."
Is it common sense? Of course more commute on MRT compared to a decade ago, otherwise, ride horse to work? It is like saying more Singaporean eat more meat compared to a decade ago where more Singaporean eat sweet potato!!!
I afraid they report this.
I dont know whether they are hintng at us that since so many pple taking mrt, they need to increase the fare so that there will be more extra trains or servicing involved.
it is hinting tt they are earning a lotta $ but not providing enough trains, tts why squeeze.
and i shall modify it.

it'd actually be quite pleasant if the majority of the people look good and smell good.
unfortunately the opposite is true. :/
now there's like 2.5m ppl taking SBS daily
Need more train, up the fare. That is one of their motto.
Luckily I dont often use the crowded stetches of MRT especially NSL/EWL. I spend time smelling people's breath (not purposely) because its too squeezy :P
