I'd say it could be emergency exits, whereby if a disaster happens, people could escape easily if a train happens to be in the middle of a tunnel.
Though it may be a hiding spot, but if the tunnel collaspe due to a surface-impact , you'll still nid an exit, therefore i'd rather consider it as an emergency exit.
That's why they never reveal it to the public...

There is no sealed side platforms. All normal tunnel walls. Only crossovers are before HBF.

you can't see the sealed platform, but you can see somewhere between NE1 and NE3, theres a straight section, you can see one.. surely!

NE2 do appear normal. However, it was revealed by some LTA workers that they reserve a 140m straight sector with intention of NE2 in mind in some other forums.
So you are right as in no phantom unlike DT4 where a cut cover box has built long before it is announced (DT4 station is not announced to date) but they do reserve a space for side platform when NEL is built back in the 1990s.

its not false. there is a NE2 planned. there is indeed 140m of straight tracks built with special tunnel walls that are designed to be removable. when the new station box is done they can just remove these walls and a new station will happen.
Are there any stations that are totally abandoned and not in use?

Nicoll Highway in in operation. The other one collapsed, so that section of the route was either abanboned or in use.
