Indonesia launches women-only train service
BBC News, Jakarta
Some women complain that men take advantage of the cramped conditions on the trains thats why Women-only train carriages have been launched in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in an attempt to prevent sexual harassment on public transport.
The state-run train operator is running two new carriages for its female passengers on one busy commuter route.
The service has been introduced after a series of complaints of sexual harassment from women who travel on Jakarta's trains and buses.
The carriages are easy to spot - with brightly covered pink seats.
It is the afternoon rush hour at one of Jakarta's main railway stations. An announcement is telling passengers how much longer they have to wait.
The trains to the suburbs are always packed, with commuters trying to get from their offices in the city back to their homes.
Female passengers have been complaining that some male commuters are taking advantage.
The state-run rail operator wants to put a stop to sexual harrassment.
For Yanti, a 22-year-old student in Jakarta, the women-only carriages are part, but not all of the solution.
"Sometimes on the train there are men who bump and push into us on purpose, and they take advantage of the cramped conditions on the trains.
"But there must be other ways to stop sexual harassment. We have to try and raise awareness about the issue as well," she says.
The service has been introduced on the busy Jakarta to Bogor route and the train operator says it will launch more women-only carriages if the experiment is effective.
For the Comfort of All Passengers!
Why not you pay for the space not utilized?
1 sqm - 9 people
so one train usually only have 1080 people
so about 56% of commuters are females so
56/100 * 1080 = 604.8 meaning around 605 ppl
1 carriage can have up to 296 person
so you need 2 carriages.
Then during non-peak hours. It would be under utilised. Then the space wasted means
WASTE SPACE -> OPERATOR LOSE MONEY -> FARES INCREASE -> BOYCOTT SMRT -> SMRT CLOSE DOWN -> NSL/EWL/CCL CLOSE DOWN
See the link? You can't suka suka anyhow say
Not a problem, the increased cost should be forked out only by female commuters, regardless they use the carraiges or not.
Yeah, agreed. If they want it, they pay it.
NO! I AM STRONGLY AGAINST THE IDEA! LOCK AND RENAME THE THREAD MODS!
Singaporean guys are much more civil compared to other countries liao lor. Unless you want to pay the extra fare out of your own pocket, then go ahead -.-
And can you imagine if morning I want to run and board the train, I still have to find which train that can allow me to go in. Run go wrong carriage also will kena whack.
WE MIGHT agree to this suggestion IF men gets a discount and females must pay more for this special privilege
You have come to wrong place. AFAIK, this forum is majority male teens who are under secondary to pre-NS and almost females here. So TS wont get what they want.
Well, I am against this idea. Coz, the gals may want to have her bf along with her in carriage then how. (Not always hug hug or what la. Then someone above mentioned caclulation should further reduce down.)
By the way, our station are not designed to have female only areas, and it means each train need to deploy additional staffs in order to implement it successfully.
So I totally disagree and hate this idea. This is backward progress of society.

Its still unfeasible to implement this. So, you can wait long long
if Singapore got Ladies Cabin.. den Ladies will pay more fares than male because
Female want female only cabin
- What will happen if rush hours, then a man go wrong cabin?
- What happen will 1 whole cabin smell strong perfumes?
- What happen if the 4 bloody security guard go in the ladies cabin?
- What if the cabin is empty while the others are bloody full?
- In an emergency, how to cross over to the ladies cabin?

Imagine if guys bring our old hobbling ah ma to polyclinic or see doctor, we need to hold her. Do the girls want to hold on to her throughout the entire journey and ensure she has a place to sit!? And grannies still don't really know how to use hp, if the stop come already, how to ask her get off, shout ah.
I am VERY AGAINST THIS!!! This is Singapore, hello?
Some restrictions.
Our mainline trains only have 6 cars. Taking out one car as female-only will mean, well, quite some space taken up, although there are that many female passengers, neither all of them can board onto that carriage.
There are no inter-carriage doors on our trains. Some sort of barrier needs to be installed and taken away when that car is for female-only.
However, points like the following, can be considered.
Female-only for the first car during peak hours, like 0700 to 0900h.
Half the car is female-only. Then again temporary barriers have to be set up, a chore in local sense.
Not unfeasible, but needs more consideration.
Adding on to this, I would like to urge male members to give it a thought before letting out comments. I understand some are very young members, give it a thought before saying anything. Things which are extreme will not be hesitated to be edited away. Thank you for your cooperation.

If there were female-only train carriages during peak hour, wouldn't the peak hour situation get worse?
already got difficulties boarding train during peak hours ......
we need more trains
Now KTM komuter is 3 car formation, now they reserving one car for female. So ridiculous, even our loading in other cars will get very chaotic. Now sarcastic is that
Some responses are very immature.
Just ask those who feel uncomfortable at night to ride in the first carraige, with the TO. Simple as that. Singapore doesn't have many deserted stations where crimes could take place. In a nutshell, I am against women-only cars as there are alternative ways to make women feel more secure, which shouldn't be such a big problem here, anyway.
The pledge mentions equality, doesn't it? Not very equal if women get special cars.
guys, dont waste your saliva. in sg, men lose. always. NS for ladies, dream on. ladies carriages. sooner or later one.

The off-peak situation is bad enough, implementing this would worsen this situation by so many times.
I don't really entertain this thread, seriously.
I dun think there is a need to open this thread, can forward to question. In the past, there do have ppl mentioning abt that
Peak hour train squeeze like sardine, how to implement?
