Sparks seen from underneath MRT train carriage, 800 passengers affected
SINGAPORE : Some 800 passengers were asked to leave an MRT train they were in on Sunday evening, when a loud sound was heard and sparks were seen coming from under the train carriage.
SMRT said the train was pulling into the Tanah Merah Station at around 9.20pm when the incident happened.
But the noise and sparks ceased when the train came to a stop at the station.
As a precaution, the passengers were asked to alight, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force called in to assist.
SMRT said westbound services through Tanah Merah Station were not
affected, as trains were routed through the middle track instead of the
usual westbound track.
No one was injured. SMRT is investigating the incident.

sparks are common at london underground system
lucky it's in the evening. Imagine if this was peak hour on monday morning...chaotic.
What kind of sparks were they to cause the train to stop? Like azharjj said, it's common on the Tube.
nonono. i meant SMRT reactions to the common sparks as mentioned. People(at least i will) will be irritated if they are interrupted on their journey to work by something that happens all the time when it's nothing serious.
Some of those sparks can be classified as electrical arcs. People may not know that our trains pick up electricity from the 3rd rail and the receivers are near the motors, so when electrical arcs occur, they think that it's actually the motors having sparks.
or could be the bloody trains were so overloaded the bloody suspension is gone and the bloody chassis is scraping against the tracks

Funny you should say that. It certainly feels like the carraige floor is scraping the ballast when going over the second crossover at UPD, heading eastbound.

Dislodged collector shoe scraping the third rail?
which train set? C151? C651 or C751B? go ask the media to learn from SMRT about trains and their set nos. If nvr say which train and its set no, very confusing.

C151.
Thought This was Quite Common For SParks -.-
I see lots of sparks at JE middle platform junction almost everytime.
The blasting noises generated was e root of the news.
Dunno but seriously I've been noticing possibly traction problem and sound whenever the trains accerlerate or 'brake' whenever approaching/ departing a station.
This time its more serious than just disruption...
I supposed before that this may be due to drive displacement. However news provider also noted that westbound train is also disrupted and 'passengers came out', means its likely with the substation at Tanah Merah. Was there lightning? I am in the west so I can't vouch for that.
Take note that DC systems have some areas more 'vulnerable' than AC... Shall elaborate if there are people interested.
This incident was caused after a loose metal piece from a non-critical component of the train came off and hit the 3rd rail.
Sparks are common...... Well, the track got electricity current mah......
Anything we don't want to alarm people with, we call it "non critical part/component"

Or also known as the air-con cover thingy.
I think sparks are common too.
just a spark... not a big deal after all.. if fire then its a bigeest deal..

Sparks are no big deal, but now we're talking about sparks and some loud noises, as in, no crossovers nothing, at the station itself. It's the aircon cover which caused it.

something fell off.
I think when everyone starts to say a spark and loud noises being normal, in time to come more sh!t occurs n no one still cares.
