SCORES of morning rush-hour commuters were stranded after service between Serangoon and Hougang stations on the North-East Line was disrupted on Wednesday morning.
Passengers were informed that the train service was down at about 9am. Some passengers complained about indefinte delays.
Ms Leya Lee, who was at Sengkang MRT station at 8.53am, said the platform was packed with commuters. When train service still had not resumed by 9.10am, Ms Lee decided to take alternative transport. She added that the queues for cabs and bus service 80, which travels to Harbourfront, were very long.
Another commuter, Mr Tang Yucai, who was travelling from Outram to Serangoon, said the train he was on had stopped for about five minutes at each station. At Little India station, he and other commuters on board were told to disembark and find alternative transport.
Train service has resumed but is still slow, said some commuters.
Responding to media queries, Ms Tammy Tan, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, of SBS Transit, said in a statement: 'At 8.25am this morning, service on the NEL was affected due to technical faults with the signalling and communication systems.
Service was temporarily disrupted for about 26 minutes between Serangoon and Hougang stations. As a result, train service at the other stations slowed down considerably. We deeply apologise to all affected commuters for the inconvenience caused.'

North East Line disrupted due to technical problems
By Imelda Saad | Posted: 21 April 2010 1256 hrsSINGAPORE : Train service on the North East Line (NEL) was temporarily disrupted for about 26 minutes between Serangoon and Hougang stations at around 8.25am on Wednesday due to technical problems.
This led to some congestion at the Circle Line as commuters diverted their routes.
At 8.25am, the situation at one of the affected stations - Sengkang - was one of confusion. A commuter said only one announcement was made throughout the disruption.
Another commuter, who wanted to be known as Luca, told MediaCorp that he took the NEL train from Sengkang at around 8.25am. He said the train had to stop at Buangkok and was delayed for nearly 25 minutes.
Luca said: "No announcement was made at all. After nearly an hour of waiting, an announcement was made informing the passengers that the train will be further delayed and passengers will have to take other means of transport as the entire NEL train route will be affected.
"There were only two staff at the Buangkok station and one of them was busy doing something at the station tower office, while the other was running in and out of the office." Luca said train services resumed at about 10.30am.
A third commuter said the train at Hougang station was down for more than half an hour.
A fourth commuter, Mr Foo, said the train he was on stopped intermittently as he travelled along Outram to Dhoby Ghaut station. He said it took him 25 minutes to reach Dhoby Ghaut instead of the usual ten.
In a statement, SBS Transit, which runs the NEL said: "At 8.25am this morning, service on the NEL was affected due to technical faults with the signalling and communication systems.
"Service was temporarily disrupted for about 26 minutes between Serangoon and Hougang stations. As a result, train service at the other stations slowed down considerably."

Look, your boss, will not accept a MRT / Bus fault / Traffic jam as a reason for late to work. Neither your school's Final Year Project's supervisor will accept that as a valid reason as well. So I would go to a doctor and take a MC instead.
I noticed something,
Didn't SBS deploy to transport the stranded passengers?
They did not. That's why.
Anyway, SOP for deployment of buses is after 1 hour glitch right? In this case, 26 minutes.

Will. Get a letter from SBST or SMRT.
There are exemptions. Unless you are a habitual latecomer and the boss has always been waiting for sometime to sack you. LOL...
how are u going to be able to instantly get buses?
I remembered some time ago NSL kena once ppl start saying can pull out buses one. Pull out and show me.
You pull buses out from revenue service! Suddenly say pull buses out from Sv 147, instead of 8 - 12 mins, now freq becomes 15 - 30 mins per bus.
As if we've 100 spare buses and drivers to stand by

Even for trains, they are pulling from the depots as well. I think is the lack of drivers to drive it, which can simply means calling the staffs from other shifts to drive as well, by giving them OTs.
And I dont see a need to keep spare buses just for rotational maintenance cycle bcoz I saw nothing on the bus depots, apart of bue parking there motionlessly.
Overheard from some NEL Depot staff saying that Kovan got some GPS problem then all the trains kena stuck. Then he was moaning and complaining that the OCC keep shouting" "How ar? How ar?". LOL.
