SMRT has spent $112 millions in the installation of half height screen doors at all above ground MRT stations.
The purpose is to prevent people from committing suicides.
The funny thing is that there is a key with a string tied to something behind the door next to the last screen door at the Jurong East MRT station from the west to east platform.
A SMRT driver goes to the door and stretches his arm behind the door and reaches for the key and then he uses the key to open the door and gain access to the part of platform that has no blockage ie anyone who intends to commit suicide can get the key, open the door and jumps onto the track towards an incoming train.
The key is probably there to let the driver to gain access easily BUT this will nullify the $112 millions that SMRT has spent on the installation half height screen doors to prevent people to commiting suicide against incoming train.
I support this actually. Especially at jurong east mrt. Dangerous at the middle track..... imagine if some rude guy gives you a little push....
The main intention, is not prevent suicides :( It was meant to prevent accidential fallen into tracks, like one in Ang Mo Kio who was engrossed in reading the books and trip into the tracks..... and died. What a wasted teacher OR cases where personal belongings such as shoes or handphones dropped into tracks and people go down to retrieve it back but unfortunately.......
If not, they would just stop building the Duxton (50 storey HDBs) and similar such.
If no MRT stations to commit suicide, they can always commit suicide in LRT stations (Excluding Ten Mile Junction) :) OR jump from a building, be it their HDB kitchen or what.
There are 101 ways to suicide and the best way to solve this issue is by counselling and not install HHPSD / or stop building High rise HDBs (Built in on the underground instead, such as a HDB address of Blk 51 #B14-101?) or ban the sale of knives (To prevent people to cutting their wrist) or ban the sale of cars (Before people sniff gas inside a car?)

Yes, the half height screen doors are to prevent people from falling unintentionally or intentionally onto the track.
The issue here is that the MRT driver has tied a key with a string behind the door for easy access and anyone who intends to commit suicide will be able to get the key, open the door and jump onto the track against an incoming train despite the half height screen doors have been installed.

No, as I said, the HHPSD is NOT intended to prevent people from falling intentionally, as they can just climb over it.
I feel safer anyway, with more old people in singapore, this door thing only brings advantages. Imagine if some old people suddenly gets a headache when the trains zooms past. That would be a life saver. As for the sucide thing, nothing to debate there, if i really want to die on the tracks, even building a fence is not able to stop me.
Please continue on the existing thread. Thanks.
