MRT lines will be graded for environmental-friendliness, in another small step towards the greening of Singapore's public transport.
The Circle Line, the first to be graded, scored gold for green measures like a system that re-uses energy produced by a braking train for a nearby train or a station.
Another measure is to fit air-conditioners with a device that removes water droplets from air leaving the cooling towers.
The grading by the Building and Construction Authority is based on an ascending scale of certified, gold, gold plus and platinum.
It allows the Land Transport Authority, which builds the MRT lines, to identify areas of improvement, Transport Minister Raymond Lim told an international conference on urban transit today.
Rail operators will benefit too from the reduction in energy consumption and added hedging against a rise in fuel costs, he said.

Technician hit by LRT train
AN INVESTIGATION into how and why a technician who was carrying out maintenance works on the tracks of a Light Rapid Transit station was hit by a train, is underway.
Mr Chia Teck Heng was on the tracks of Ten Mile Junction LRT station doing some maintenance works, when he was hit by an oncoming train last Sunday.
The impact of the crash left him with head and leg injuries, and also resulted in his right leg being amputated.
Train operator SMRT said investigations on the incident are ongoing.
The Straits Times understands that part of the investigations include whether any safety rules were flouted, resulting in the accident.
SMRT said it has in place strict regulations for granting staff access to the tracks to do any kind of works.

Tampines train track hitch causing delay
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1091932/1/.html
SINGAPORE: A problem along the tracks at Tampines MRT station is causing delay for passengers travelling east towards Pasir Ris.
The problem started at 5.30pm Sunday.
SMRT says it has not been able to fix the problem due to rain and lightning.
It adds that passengers from every alternate incoming train along that particular east-bound line at Tampines are being asked to alight at the station and wait for the next train instead.
SMRT says it cannot say when the problem can be fixed and that it would depend on the rain and lightning situation.

Obviously the media gave a wrong info. It doesn't take you 5 minutes to reach Bukit Timah from Tanjong Pagar.

I would be very happy if it did.
Adding on:
THREE carriages of a KTM passenger train, bound for Kuala Lumpur, derailed along the track at
Bukit Timah Road, near King Albert Park, at about 8.15am on Tuesday morning.
No one was reported hurt.The train left Tanjong Pagar station at about 8am and went off track at the section
near King Albert Park. Only the first three carriages derailed, with the first more badly damaged than the
other two.A passenger told The Straits Times at the scene: 'The train braked very hard suddenly.
But most on us on board didn't think there was anything wrong. Everyone was calm. We realised the
first few carriages had derailed when the train came to a stop along the track at Bukit Timah.'

This is because our system resembles the old CS-ATC-4 system used in Japan and that system has a overhead of 150s. And if you noticed in the press release article above, it mentioned;
Even LTA says that the minimum waiting time currently is 2.5 minutes. If you do a math;
2.5 minutes = 2 minutes 30 seconds = 150 seconds
The shortest frequency I've seen in Japan is 14 seconds. Under this context, frequency is defined as the time elasped the moment front train has totally cleared the station/platform before the head of the train behind "touches" the "rear end" of the platform.
India's train system is 90 seconds between trains.
Special Features: Ornate architecture (at least 44 of these stations are rated as architectural sights). The system has many trains that stop at high frequency, every 90 seconds during peak hours.
