JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia: Seven passengers were injured when an
express train travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore derailed near a
train station at Batu Anam, Segamat, in Johor on Monday.
Bernama news agency quoted Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB)
southern region manager Tariq Omar as saying the Ekspres Sinaran Pagi
train was carrying more than 250 passengers when six of its nine
coaches jumped the rail at 11.50am.
"Four of the affected coaches were for passengers while two others were for the cafeteria and generator," he said.
Tariq said the seven injured passengers were sent to Segamat district hospital for treatment.
Malaysian media reports said among the passengers injured were three Singaporeans.
All the train passengers continued their journey on chartered buses.
Meanwhile, a KTMB statement from Kuala Lumpur said the derailment
of the train would not disrupt intercity operation to the southern
sector.
KTMB said it was still investigating the cause of the train
derailment. It said work to lift the coaches and repair the rail was in
progress and would be completed by Tuesday. - CNA/de
