22 new trains for North-South and East-West Lines
The Land Transport Authority has awarded a $368 million contract for 22 new trains for the North-South and East-West Lines.
The trains are scheduled to be progressively delivered to Singapore from 2011 till 2012.
With the 22 new trains and modifications for an additional track at Jurong East station, LTA says commuters will experience a shorter waiting time and a more comfortable ride on trains during peak periods.
The modifications and new trains will increase the capacity of the North-South, East- West Lines by about 15 percent and enable the lines to meet projected demand till 2020.

got enough space to accomodate them?
Throw the C651s out!! Hahaha, heard from SMRT staffs, C651 isn't good.
22 new trains = 3-4 mins per train pls!
hahaha, unless if it's KTM komuter. 20-30mins of train pls!
sometimes, 40-60mins train, can be delayed up to 2hrs!! imagine that. they have only 32 sets of EMUs, but only less than 20 can be used.

22 New Trains For North-South / East-West Lines
1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded Contract 151A to the consortium of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (S) Pte Ltd and CSR Qingdao Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd at an approximate value of S$368 million.

4. The LTA announced in July last year that it will carry out the Jurong East Modification Project (JEMP) to overcome the infrastructural constraint by creating an additional train track and platform at Jurong East Station which will help improve train turn around time.
5. To complement this improvement, the LTA is purchasing an additional 22 trains for the NSEWL. Commuters will be able to enjoy the benefits of a shorter waiting time for trains along the NSEWL and a more comfortable ride during peak periods.
6. The JEMP and purchase of 22
additional trains will increase the capacity of the NSEW Lines by about 15
percent and enable the lines to meet projected demand till 2020.

then what do they provide ah? in wiki, C151 is written this way
These trains were manufactured from 1986 to 1989 in batches, headed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (21 trainsets), collaborating with Nippon Sharyo, Tokyu Car Corp and Kinki Sharyo as a Japanese consortium.
so if the trains are made by Nippon Sharyo, Tokyu Car and Kinki Sharyo, what is KHI doing here? I guess Qingdao Sifang is playing the same role as Nippon Sharyo, Tokyu Car or Kinki Sharyo?
wow., we can expect fare hike again. ha ha ha

Indeed CSR Qingdao will be making the body works and stuff. Welding, manufacturing, and stuff... So Kawasaki train with CSR Qingdao bodywork sounds plausible.
Don't worry about the train conditions. We have to replace it more often and spend more to give more jobs to people (of PRC). That's why thanks to China, the economy is booming with increasing spending and consumption (to replace their products) :P

And why is C651 not good? Yes, they have derailed and overshot and killed people occasionally, but I don't think they are that bad...are they?
cuz those co-made by nippon sharyo, their engine sounds the weirdest
i only like those from kinki sharyo

said by SMRT staffs.
they say, the body rust easily. most of them have to be recoat with a new layer of paint at a point of time..

All of them are traincar builders. None of them supplied propulsion equipment for C151 contract. Mitsubishi Electric motors have been powering the C151 for two decades already.
In fact, Kawasaki-built trains are occasionally fitted with Siemens motors in Japan, and in New York with Alstom ONIX motors.
It is possible that China may be the one supplying the motors this time round.

C651 did a lot better job in preventing rust than for C151.

If the usual supplier is used for MRT half-barriers :

Hmm will the trains look the same? As in same type of body structure & configuration? Or will the look change radically
by 2012... tat means gotta buy more trains to cope for Tuas Extn again... now BLE no additional train purchased before hand
i dun see a problem with the new rolling stock
at least kawasaki industries will guarantee the quality...still e same supplier roughly
