They appear at crossings (or crossovers) when the shoes runs out of the 3rd rail.

Train to Pasir Ris (033/034): "Uh... We got a technical problem. Will delay abit ah. Sorry for the uh... inconveniences." [TO speaking]

Haha! I was in 3033. Got shut out of the train the first time the door closed. Then ran back in only to go out again 2 minutes later cause I can't tahan the stuffiness.
i was in the last carriage!
Then if you saw a guy choinging into the train wearing a beige shirt with jeans through the last door, that's me.
is it with ur camera?
Yup. Where were you?
i wearing the grey shirt, green bermuda short and with my zinc bag.
Hmm... Didn't notice you, haha.
but i saw u wearing glasses. Is it u?
Yup, I'm with the glasses.
Signs of trouble. Notice that only emergency lightings are on. For 033/034, emergency lights kicked in after we left the Joo Koon crosover.
People starting to come out of the train.
The following are pictures I took because I was bored.
033/034 emergency lights conked out.
Faulty door?
People finally got sick of the stuffiness and slowly started to get seats on the platform.
Waiting for the shuttle bus to Boon Lay. Notice the long line of people on the bridge queuing for the refund. At this point of time, passengers going towards Joo Koon had received no instructions yet. Some of the passengers going towards the east resorted to the normal SBST buses which came along instead of waiting for the SMRT ones. All SBST buses were packed to the brim with about 20-30 minutes worth of train passengers.
no wonder the train is running so slowly between Pioneer to Joo Koon at about 8+ in the night when I took it..

037/038 was heading for Joo Koon. When 033/034 entered the station with the emergency power, 037/038 was stuck there already.

If i'm not wrong, both end of the trailer car at the lower left / right the contacting shoes is sticking out:
An electrical spark will created when the train is crossing the cross-over:
