SMRT train waiting time > 7 mins no display?

On NSL the train timings are all shown even if it is 10+ mins. Only exception is on weekends.

I wouldn't mind train timings in seconds as well. Common reason: If Taipei Metro, Kaohsiung MRT and mainland Chinese cities all have that, how can a "world class" metro like ours not?
Likewise for multi-announcements.
The they have it and you must have too syndrome.
But seriously, at least have the timing for the next 2 trains on the platform, even if only in mins, for now. Because if we miss the train on the platform at Yio Chu Kang we only know the timing of the next train terminating at Yishun. What about the Jurong East bound one after that?
And hiding train timings just because its over 6 mins is a lame excuse. I rather they actually tell me its coming in 10 mins then not tell me at all. NOw people will get pissed at not only waiting for a train 7-8 mins, ppl will be pissed at how they don't know its 7-8 mins!

It's a smart ploy to cover up if the train comes later than the actual timing. I've seen '1 min' being longer than 1 minute before. Though it won't be very fair to the drivers, there should be a timetable system which show roughly what time the train will come so that people can roughly gauge when to wait by the platform. I feel more satisfied if there is an actual train timing and not a prediction system telling me 1 minute despite not being actually 1 minute to the train's arrival.

Last time NEL even show 9 minutes.
Its just like last time mac's got the 30s, or a free apple pie, but conveniently, and quietly they stopped doing it even when the timer was sitting on the counter. -

If we read the announcements in all 4 languages, the whole journey would be full of announcements. And so many people are complaining about too many announcements.

sometimes the SMRT "2 min" is 3 min or more
usually the NEL "2 min" is faster than the SMRT one.

While we contend with this - a vague "Changi Airport - Arriving in 2 mins" that appears full screen every 30 seconds or so, with its smaller text variant flashing every 15 seconds or so:

The Taipei-ites have this - "To Danshui - 5 mins 25 seconds" that is ALWAYS on and freshes itself every 5 seconds. I believe some mainland Chinese subways have the train arrival information countdown in real time even.

Rather than hide the information about 5-6 mins waiting time, they even put the info down to the second. Talk about full transparency, accountability and reliability.
There is the argument that we should not engage in a "they have it so we must have it too". Agreed but not so when it concerns things such as train timing information and multilingual announcements. It is only decent to be provided with such basic information when travelling in a "world class metro" and for the ease of use of all commuters taking into account their proficiencies in the english language.
And as we have seen in other metros, it is possible and practical to implement the above. Its just that its just so easy to come up with an excuse not to, albeit a lame one.

NEL 2 mins is less than 2 mins.

i love SMRT's big arrival timings.. unlike NEL smaller font and poor colour contrast.. only hope SMRT can have 2 screens per platform like NEL..
about the timings, now then i realise i didnt see >7mins timings anymore.. last time i saw a blank screen I thought got an incident happened and the last unaffected train is arriving...
about the seconds issue, dont think its very useful, unless we are saying the trains comes up to 59 seconds late or early, which they dont.. noone will expect them to arrive with a +/- difference of 0 seconds -

1. waiting 30 seconds for a full screen version
2. waiting 15 seconds for a small one line version like NEL
3. Not even being able to see the screen located skewed to one end of the platform while i am on the other end.
4. The screens have many burn in marks and looks cheapo compared to NEL's Samsung
For NEL, at least even tho the fonts are small
1. it doesnt matter since the screens are in the perfect position so we can see the time clearly
2. The screens are new and quality stuff *samsung
3. The times are always on
Seconds matter if you are walking towards the concourse level and the screen says 1 min. You dont know if you have 1 min or 5 seconds to rush to catch the train that comes every 7 minutes.
Seconds matter also in terms of transparency. You know SMRT isn't lying. Because as of now, we know they are.
Just my two cents. :)
