Hi,
Pardon my n00bness in asking this but...
What is the light on top of the MRT for? How come the light is on during peak hours or heavy rain?
I've heard about AM,CM and RM modes. What do they exactly mean?
Lastly, may I also ask what is the meaning of the trip number (top left of the train head). As in, what do the different numbers mean?
Thanks...

The light on top signals that the train is running in CM mode, i'm not sure for RM mode though.
AM stands for Automatic Mode.
CM stands for Coded Manual, which is manual mode using some kind of code.
RM not too sure, but i believe that it stands for Raining Mode.
Maybe due to some TOs dont know how to use CM mode.
Individual cars are assigned a 4 digit serial number by the rail operator SMRT.
The second digit is the generation batch. for example, a first generation C151 would be a 0 or 1. A C651 being, a second generation, would be a 2 ranging from x201 to x238, where x depends on the carriage type. And a C751B would be a 3.
Hope this helps! =)

Automatic = Train operated by Automatic Train Operation (ATO).
CM = Coded Manual.
TO drives, speed is limited by ATP (Automatic Train Protection). Used when raining,
constant orange light.
RM = Restricted Manual.
TO have controls but speed is restricted to only 10 - 20 km/h (not sure of the exaxt speed) in this mode. Used in deport or when ATO / ATP fails somewhere, flashing orange light.

Thanks for the RM part =)
why are all the modes not available in the internet?
Seems that the TO are better trained at CM now.
seldom got sudden braking.
Some very pro, zhun zhun stop at marking, at the perfect speed.
hahaha..
took a refurb C151 frm dover to jurong east just now. forget the set no. so not sure what train is it.. it was driving in CM mode. can see the orange constant light on top.
the driver stopped before the CSP and it accelerates towards the CSP, slowly and steadily. till jurong east, i think got the technician came onboard and they change drivers there. peeped inside the drivers cab and the driver smiled at me...

dont peep, wait one day the TO invite you to drive the train =)
won't happen, at most is only let you in to observe how the TO operates the train..
but still, a worthwhile experience..

Individual cars are assigned a 4 digit serial number by the rail operator SMRT.
- The first digit depends upon whether the car is the first, second or third car from either end of the train, where the first car equals 3, the second equals 1 and the third equals 2.
- The other 3 digits is the train identification number. A full length train of 6 cars have 2 different identification number, one for the first 3 cars, and the same number plus 1, for the other three. The smaller number is always an odd number. For example, a train would consist of 6 cars with serial number 3033, 1033, 2033, 2034, 1034, 3034 respectively.
The second digit is the generation batch. for example, a first generation C151 would be a 0 or 1. A C651 being, a second generation, would be a 2 ranging from x201 to x238, where x depends on the carriage type. And a C751B would be a 3.

Thanks a lot guys! I've always thought that CM = control mode or something...
By the way, what about the trip number displayed at the train ends, near the windshield? Thanks in advance:)

Its the service number of the train, similar to the run number of buses.
There are 3 types of operating modes.
1) Restricted Manual Mode: When the mode selector is placed in FORward,
REVerse position. In Restricted Manual Mode, the mode selector may be
placed in FORward, STAND-BY or REVerse according to the demand of
operation. This mode is used for the reversing of train or when the ATC
system fails. The Restricted Manual Mode is also used when train is
moving inside the depot.
2) Coded Manual Mode: When in this position, the train is
controlled manually by the Master Controller Handle according to the
demands of operation. In this operation, an emergency brake will be
applied if the train exceeds the permissible ATP target speed limits or
when the DSD on the Master Controller Handle is released.
3) Auto Mode: In this position, the train operates in full
automatic, by depressing the two green colour ATC Start Buttons
simultaneously after every starting conditions like all train doors and
ATP clearance are completed and established.
