The BPLRT has new fare gates installed to replace the self-help gates. The self help gates were originally there for people to place their bulky items which cannot pass through the turnstiles on the other side of the gate (like KCR East Rail style). However, this has often been misused, unlike KCR (now MTR East Rail Line), there isn't any one to supervise this process at the LRT stations, and people could use it for a free ride on the BPLRT.
The old gate (taken at Senja station)
The new faregate (taken at Choa Chu Kang Station)
Currently, Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang stations have the new gates. The others still have the old gates. And after tapping on the machine, you have to push it yourself, not dissimilar to such gates at Sentosa Express stations.
Almost all the stations have it already. I tried it out 'cause the faregates aren't working when I tapped my Ez-link card. Pushing the door is very hard and you have to wait for the doors to close before you use it again. Sigh... Wasted my energy.

I wished they did not install that so I can get free rides everyday. Haha lol.
