ALSTOM Transport has clinched a contract to supply the tracks for the new Downtown Line.
The $238 million contract includes the design, installation of tracks and a power supply rail in the first and second stages of the project.
The 40km-long Downtown Line, with 33 stations, will link the north-west and eastern parts of Singapore to the Marina entertainment and financial districts. It is due for completion in 2016.
It will cost the Government $12 billion to build.
French company Alstom said it will start work in 2011 and complete the first two stages by 2015.
The Land Transport Authority is likely to call tenders for the third and final stages of work later this year. So far, more than $2.9 billion worth of contracts have been awarded.
Alstom is no stranger to Singapore. It equipped the North-East Line with a driverless train system and is the main contractor for the Circle Line - supplying the trains, tracks, signalling system and power.
Five stations in the Circle Line are due to open at the end of May.
When completed, the Circle Line will be the longest fully automated metro line in the world, stretching 33km.

That means PayaLebar would have 3 track running through it like TanahMerah, but with the center track non-functional?

it is built like what the middle tracks at AMK, Jurong East and Tanah Merah originally is for. to let trains returning to depot wait for revenue service trains to pass first.
Circle Line conducts emergency exercise
An emergency exercise was conducted at the Circle Line MRT stations between Bartley and Marymount this morning.
Some 550 people took part in the two-hour exercise to test the readiness of the Circle Line operations staff for a large-scale emergency.
Saifulbahri Ismail, who participated in the exercise, with this report.
The simulated incident involved an explosion in one of the train carriages.
It resulted in a fire and smoke which spread through the packed train.
A passenger was heard reporting the incident via the communications set to the operations control centre at the Kim Chian depot.
The train subsequently came to a halt about 80 metres from the Serangoon Central station.
Trapped passengers were then asked to disembark from the train :
"Attention passengers in the leading car. Please open the detrainment door located at the front end of the car. All passengers, please move calmly towards the front of the train and leave the train via the detrainment ramp."
All passengers had to walk along the tracks to the nearest station.
There were 20 casualties in the exercise, and they were evacuated by SCDF officers who arrived about five minutes after the incident.
Among the participants were 300 students and teachers from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School.
14-year old Vito Benjamin Sugianto, who took part in such a simulated exercise for the first time, thought it was quite realistic.
"I think it's really quite realistic as they had the smoke simulation and the fire simulation, and I think it really prepares us, so that if there's really an accident happening or like there's a bomb blast or a terrorist attack, this thing has prepared us, physically and mentally for this kind of experience."
Speaking to reporters after the exercise, Chief Executive of Land Transport Authority Yam Ah Mee gave his assessment of the exercise.
"So overall the exercise met its objectives and the participants have a very good experience of what is it like when there's an emergency in the train and through this exercise it gives us a lot more confidence in the opening of the Circle Line in the middle of this year."
The emergency exercise was developed and coordinated by LTA with the support of SMRT, the civil defence and police force.

Circle Line Emergency Exercise Fire onboard a busy Circle Line train
1. Over 500 people took part in an emergency preparedness exercise this morning to test the Circle Line operations staff's readiness for a large-scale emergency.
2. The two-hour emergency exercise took place at the Circle Line stations between Bartley to Marymount, which are the first five stations to open for passenger service on 30 May 2009.
3. "Today's emergency exercise allows us to test the effectiveness of SMRT and the various agencies' emergency response plans and procedures. The exercise was an excellent opportunity for residents in the area to learn about safety procedures in a realistic setting. I would like to thank all agencies for their hard work in putting together this exercise as well as all who took part in it", said Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, who graced the exercise this morning.
4. The exercise began with the SMRT staff conducting a safety briefing to the public before the simulation began. The simulation began at about 10.00am, with SMRT station and Operation Control Centre staff working with officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Police Force (SPF) to detrain and rescue the commuters trapped in the train following a fire. The train was heading eastbound from Lorong Chuan to Serangoon Station when the incident happened.
5. Among the participants were 300 students and teachers from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School and 120 grassroots members from three constituencies along the Circle Linalong the Circle Line's Bartley to Marymount alignment (Braddell Heights, Bishan-Toa Payoh North, and Geylang Serai). All took away a first hand experience of what to expect during an emergency and the correct safety procedures in the event of a detrainment.
6. Mr Gary Tan, 49, from the Braddell Heights Constituency, said, "This emergency exercise is very useful indeed. By exposing members of the public to the drills of the exercise, we all have a first hand feel of what to expect during an emergency. It also allows us to be more aware of the preparedness level of the authorities and train operators."
7. Vito Benjamin Sugianto, 14, from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School exclaimed, "I have never participated in an emergency exercise. I am very excited to be involved in this exercise as one of the new Circle Line station is located right in front of my house! It is also an honour to be one of the first few to ride on the new Circle Line train."
8. This emergency exercise was developed and coordinated by the Land Transport Authority, with the support of SMRT, SCDF and SPF.
