New information system on board SMRT trains
The next time you miss an announcement on where the next stop is on board a train, you can turn to a new visual information system that will tell you just that.
The system developed by SMRT , will also indicate which side of the train the door will open at the next station.
Transport Reporter Lin Jiamei with more.
The new system is made up of a route map with all the stations marked, very much like what you already see on the trains.
However it has new features added to it - red and green lights that will light up at the appropriate stations, indicating which direction you are heading and what the next stop is.
Beside the panel, to be located above every door, is a separate light, indicating which side of the train the door will open at the next train station.
And if you are standing in the middle of the train car, look up and you will find a flourescent display panel showing multi language text of the audio announcements.
Here's what some commuters make of these added features.
"It has happened a few times where we were facing the wrong door and all of a sudden you have to turn around and push your way through but with this to help, you can plan in advance so that when the light is flashing you know you are facing the wrong door if the lights are red."
"Sometimes you are not sure whether you are alighting the right station or not and you have to look out the window to check where you are. So with this it is much better."
"At least we know which station we are at . So other than the PA system this is an alternative. (what else do you hope to see?) Maybe the estimated time where you will be arriving at the next station. "
The new system, which costs some 120 000 dollars to install per train, is already on trial on one train.
The system will be gradually rolled out for SMRT's 106 trains over the next year and a half.
SMRT says it will not pass on these extra costs to commuters.
Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer Yeo Meng Hin, on whether it will consider adding more features on the panels, such as the estimated time of arrival.
"That is something we can think about. We wanted to get the information that is most critical out to the customers first . As far as the time to station, it is something additional, we will look at it. " --938Live
Just saw the news, looks very MTR, especially the City Hall/Raffles place part. Looks like Prince Edward to Yau Ma Tei.
Are they going to fit the VPIS back onto the C751Bs?
"SMRT says it will not pass on these extra costs to commuters."
WTF LOL. This thing is not much of a use anyway.. What the heck.

Ya lar ya lar, you clever ok? Since u said no use, so why you still care? This will benefit old people or toursits. I know won't benefit you but don't say until like this thing scold you like that. At least SMRT is trying to make an improvement.
Implement improvement say no use, don't improve then complain and KPKB say why never improve. Pek chek man!
Finally, they are going to copy the correct thing ....
As the costs ... it will come in some way or another ...

CAN’T hear the name of the station when arriving at the next stop? Wondering whether thedoors will open on the right or left side? Soon, commuters can use a new onboard rail travel information system to find the answers.
SMRT, which operates the North-South and East-West lines, put the system — which includes a new route map and information system — on trial on one train on Friday.
Unlike the existing static route maps in trains, the new map mounted above all train doors will indicate the direction of travel with a series of lights. A red light will show the current station, while a blinking red light will indicate the next station.
A series of green lights will indicate which line the train is travelling on, and the direction of travel. The route map will also have a “door opening” indicator, to show which side of the train the doors will open. Information about terminal and interchange stations will also be shown.
In addition, a fluorescent unit — similar to those seen in 21 trains here — will be mounted on train ceilings, displaying multi-language text synchronised with in-train audio announcements.
The system, called STARIS, was developed by SMRT over two months. It will be installed on all 106 SMRT trains after the trial ends in January. The entire installation would cost the train operator around $12.72 million, and should be completed by 2010.
SMRT deputy president and chief operating officer Yeo Meng Hin said costs would not be passed on to commuters: “It is a service issue and not a fare issue.” . Commuters on the trial train gave their thumbs up. Frenchman Franklin Huber, 26, said: “It helps to tell where you are going. The trains can be quite noisy so we may not hear the announcements.” - TODAY

I agree...but at least they are trying to copy something useful and bill commuters for it...not like they neber do anything and raise the fare due to "increase in operational costs"...
dunno what's the big deal anyway....other countries already have it...we are just following.so many news articles on it.
In wikipedia, it says it is currently in a 2-month trail on trainset 053/054. I try this sunday to see if I can board that train.
I haven't even seen that train since the day I first posted bout this installed in 2053 only in the Questions thread...
