I would support all announcements in all four languages too, just as it was before when they announced the stations names this way. This is befitting of our city as a multi-cultural one, and there are actually tourists who marvel at this even if they cannot understand 75% of it.
When I was in Taipei, they make all announcements in Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka and English. They still have time to close the door thou. ;)

announcement now is great. add more languages make is too much. like the way how the voice tells you if you arrive at an interchange station. like: "jurong east interchange, this train service terminates at this station, passengers who are continuing their journey towards the city, pasir ris or changi airport please proceed to platform A on the left. Passengers who are continuing their journey towards boon lay, please proceed to platform B on the right, Jurong east interchange". its very good tourists they all understand english

I doubt the large numbers of Chinese, Japanese, or Indonesian tourists are masters of the English language thou.

Since the rate of literacy is high, I can assume that most commuters can read. I prefer quiet environments and rather dislike the repetitive announcements. What they should do is having LCD scream like those you see in the NEL. And they can input inside the data on the next station and etc. At the same time, perhaps they can have two columns of the same station name displayed on the LCD. The left would be English, and the right would keep reverting from Chinese to Malay to Indian and back again. Those who've been to Japan and seen the LCD screen in the train on the Yamanote & Chuo line will understand. (i.e. they have Kanji of the station name and the next minute it flickers to the Hiragana characters)

Why not have 4 columns/2 rows and two columns/ whatever, just 4 boxes, put all 4 languages there?

Actually, I think the NEL has multilingual announcements. They tend to repeat it a lot more than the SMRT. And it can be a little noisy at times.

Lol, that would be so random using Japanese in the trains. Example: Tsugi wa Dhoby Ghaut, Dhoby Ghaut. O-deguchi wa migigawa desu. Touzai-sen, Nanboku-sen, Tounan-sen wa O-norikae desu. Kono densha wa Kanjou-sen de, uchi-mawari, Paya Lebar, Bishan houmen yuki desu. Kanjou-sen wo go-riyuu itadakimashite arigatou gozaimasu. That would be pretty random. i find all the announcements in 4 languages v v irritating.. esp SBS's NEL (mind the gap, what station etc) some more the station's distances are so short, theres hardly much time where there is no announcements on-going.
SMRT not so bad.. except the Going to JB advertisement, but otherwise their announcements freq is OK.. last time got one time after every station they will say "This train will terminate at Pasir Ris/ Boon Lay/ J East/ Marina Bay Station".. imagine someone from pasir ris sit till boon lay.. hear same announcements 20+ times -

Actually I think there is only a need for these 2 announcements.
Before reaching the station. "Toa Payoh"
Before closing the doors. "Doors Closing.... Beep beep beep beep"
Only need for one language, which is the working language, English.
For Mandarin, I don't think the elder folks actually listen to the Mandarin Version. Imagine Toa Payoh.... Da Ba Yao.... where is da ba yao.... they only know dua payo... Bukit Batok.... wu ji ba du.... where is wu ji ba du.... they only know bukit buttock...In Singapore, people use English for names of places.... so its only necessary for it to be in English.
And....
Imagine during the morning when you are going for work, and these announcements keep repeating and repeating? Its so annoying!!!!

I think its perfectly fine, in hongkong, ALL annoucements, and i really mean all, are played in cantonese, english, and mandrin, and i think it helps, quite alot.

I think that the announcements should be simple, and more emphasis on other languages through the under-utilised LCD televisions.
The new English annoucements are very long winded as well, plus we don't need the annoying chime for every single announcement.
For instance, we could have:
Next station, City Hall interchange. Change here for the East West Line
xia yi zhan, zheng fu da sha, cheng ke keyi huan cheng dong xi xian.
(Malay and Tamil equivalent)Then, when we arrive at the station, the announcements can warn 'please mind the gap' in four languages.
But seriously, the VFDs should be used for other languages. It's best that way.

If this were to be implemented, it will be like TokyoMetro. Keep talking thoughout the whole journey...... I feel that Hong Kong's MTR is also good at doing multilanguage.....

It's easy. Just cut the redundant announcements.
*ding dong* Doors are closing. 车门æ£åœ¨é—å�ˆ. Pintu akan tutup. (Indian variation) *13 beeps* Takes less than 10 seconds.
*ding dong* Next station, ABCDEFG. 下一站, ABCDEFG. Stesen berikutnya, ABCDEFG. (Indian variation) Takes less than 20 seconds.
Interchange arrival announcements may take 30 seconds but the announcements can be made earlier.

In the Philippines, though, train announcements are like this:
***ding*dong**
"Next Station, Pureza. Ang susunod na istasyon ay Pureza."
Then, when arriving...
***ding*dong**
"Arriving at Pureza station.
Paparating na sa Pureza station."
That's it! No more announcements!
