SINGAPORE : SMRT has seen ridership going up since it increased train runs in February.
Ridership for January to March alone shot up 10.9 percent, following the increase in taxi fares.
For the entire year, ridership was up 7.9 percent from the year before.
SMRT’s trains carried more than 469 million commuters last year.
Currently, the trains carry an average load of 1,400 commuters per train.
This is lower than the Land Transport Authority’s recommended capacity of 1,700.
SMRT will be rolling out an extra 700 train trips to ramp—up its capacity next month.
It said it is also on track to start Circle Line services by the middle of next year. — CNA/ms
