After the incident of the Government stepping in in attempt to 'clean' the mess transport operators are making, I have never heard of any more improvements other than inproving train frequencies.
Has anyone any info on SMRT buying new trains a.k.a. 4th gen trains a.k.a. C851s (if i'm not wrong)???
4th Generation train should be C951 because C851 is already used for Downtown Line MRT train. LTA has put up C851 for tender and is expected to announce which train manufacturer will be awarded the contract by LTA to build C851 train for DTL.
Yes, it was mentioned in Transport Minister Raymond Lim's speech that Singapore government is working with SMRT on purchasing additional trains in 2011 or 2012. But there is not much details at the moment. Just wait and see. You will never know when LTA will put up tender for C951 one day....
so that gives the govt another gd reason to increase the cost

SMRT need to buy additional train to accomodate the capacity needed for future NSL and EWL Tuas extension at Marina Bay and Joo Koon respectively. Maybe about 20 C951 trains.
Yesh. They need more new trains for the boon lay extention.
I hope all of the C951 trains will only run on EWL.

unfortunately no such thing de. cos every train needs to go back to bishan depot at some point of time. i see more C651s on EWL. while i see more C751Bs on NSL.

I don't really care about the train as long as it has old annoucements.

just one piece of advice, start getting use to the new one.

Its not a matter of getting use to it. It is a matter of unprofessionalism shown by SMRT due to some words of phrases sounding weird and sometimes even pronounced incorrectly. For instance, Yishun was pronounced as "yee-soon" in the new annoucements and "Passenger travelling towards........" sounded the weirdest and most irritating. This is because the new annoucer's voice is too high pitched and therefore unsuitable for in-train annoucements. In fact, most of the annoucements and the "siren" sound irritating actually. Europeans who take a ride on our MRT will therefore think that Singapore is unable to use the English Language properly.

I checked and found out that C851 is actually the contract awarded to constructor for building CCL tunnels and MRT station. So I want to rectify the error I made when I remembered the Contract Number wrongly that it is used for awarding contract to train manufacturer.
C851A is the contract being awarded to a constructor to construct Bartley CCL station. But I cannot find C851 without "A". So it is safe to assume that C851 is for constructing the CCL tunnels along Bartley Road.
So the 4th series should be labelled as C951. LTA put up the tender on C951 Electric Trains in Nov 07 and has since extended the closing date to June 08. We will know the result of which train manufacturer will be awarded Contract 951 in early July 08.
I think C951A/C951B train will be designed, developed, tested and deployed for possibly Downtown Line and NSL/EWL extension respectively. Or maybe C951 is solely for Downtown MRT while next contract on train could be the one for NSL/ELW extension.
By the way, Downtown MRT article on wikipedia shows that the rolling stock for DTL is Alstom.
This is completely speculation because LTA has yet to award C951 contract to train manufacturer to build train for DTL. So someone who manage the article on Downtown MRT Line should remove that part.

Not enough. There's still a possible Tuas extension of 5 stations after Joo Koon.
And I thought many people were complaining that SMRT does not have enough trains... Hmm?
SMRT needs at least 10 trains to supplement this Joo Koon extension as well as at least 20 more for fleet addition. Or not passengers will complain them upside down.

Downtown and NSL/EWL will HAVE to use different trains if Alstom wants to bring in Metropolis for DTL.
Because the track systems are different, an Alstom cannot run on EWL or NSL. Even though for the CCL they are also using 750V DC power, but their track signals are totally different. So we can readily assume that Alstom cannot run their Metropolis on the EWL for the Joo Koon extension. Or unless if SMRT wants the DTL to use the same type of trains and their train signals for EWL/NSL, then it is possible they order as a bulk.
Of course.
But I am not sure if C951 will break into two groups, C951A and C951B when being awarded to contractor in which means that C951A will go to Alstom for DTL while C951B go to Kawasaki or Siemens for NSL/EWL extension. But I think it is unlikely to happen as we are just 7 years away from the opening of NSL/EWL extension in 2015. So I believe that C951 will be train for DTL only. Just wait and see in early July 08 when the award of contract is announced after closing date in late Jun 08.

Then maybe we will have C1051? o_O
The contract should be going to the same dual companies that manufacture the C751B, the KNS group. I hope you get what I mean by Kanasai (KNS). =D
New trains on the way. No other details available on wat model. A train is a train so long it dun breaks down is a good train. Dun bother about 851 or 951 or 1051. Numbers not important. Its the technology that matters.

Actually whats even more important is... how many trains being bought? xD

I just hope that the new EWL/NSL trains will be similar to the C751Bs.

I hope not. I would want a newer design.

It would be darn boring. The VVVF Technology on the C751B is already noisy enough, you can hear it hissing like nobody's business sometimes at the end of the trains.

But C751B has a nice takeoff sound and LEDs.
Erm... I dunno if this is a dumb question but I'm gonna ask anyway.
Why do all the contracts for trains end with a 51?
